Dartmouth Falls To Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team ran into a red hot goalie at Quinnipiac as the Bobcats netminder was able to shutdown the Big Green and score a 2-0 victory for the home team.
Quinnipiac's netminder was the difference for the Bobcats as Eric Hartzell stymied Dartmouth all night, earning his first shutout of the season.
The Bobcats tallied the first score of the game with 5:33 remaining in the second period when Jeremy Langlois and John Dunbar passed the puck back and forth while skating down.
Langlois came down the right side, drawing James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) over before quickly shooting across ice to Dunbar who put it beind the netminder for the score. Scott Zurevinski had an empty net goal with 14.3 left in the contest for the second goal.
The Big Green held the lead in shots, 22-15 after the second break but the Bobcats held the lead in goals as the blue and gold looked to win just its second league game of the season. Dartmouth did a great job throughout much of the period breaking up QU's passing lanes and not allowing the Bobcat's to clear but it just wasn't enough.
The Big Green had several chances to get on the board early.
Midway through the opening period, Adam Estoclet's (Orono, Minn.) centering pass came dangerously close to the goal line as Hartzell had to come out and slap the puck away.
Then in the waning minutes of the frame, Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) was camped at the left post and as Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) sent the puck down, Reeds could not get his stick down in time to slap it past Hartzell.
Despite tremendous pressure throughout much of the third period, Dartmouth could not find an answer for Hartzell in net as shot after shot was turned away. The shutout is the second on the Big Green this season.
Hartzell made 31 saves while Mello recorded 20. The loss is the first for Mello this season as he is now 2-1-1, Hartzell improved to 3-0. Dartmouth held the final tally in shots, 31-21.
The Big Green will be back in action tomorrow afternoon in a 4 p.m. tilt at Princeton.
