Ford's Nets Overtime Winner
ITHACA, N.Y. (11/13/10) - Will Ford scored his first collegiate goal midway through overtime to lift the Princeton men's hockey team to a 2-1 win at Cornell on Saturday night at Lynah Rink. The win is Princeton's third in a row as the Tigers move to 3-3 this season.
Princeton went ahead late in the first period on Eric Meland's first goal of the season. The goal came on the face-off immediately following a Cornell penalty as Meland won the draw back to Michael Sdao, whose point shot was tipped by Meland on its way to the net and got past Cornell goaltender Andy Iles.
Princeton held the lead through the second period through much of the third before the Big Red picked up the equalizer with nine seconds remaining and Iles pulled. But before that Princeton had to survive a long video replay in the 11th minute of the third when a Patrick Kennedy shot rang off the post and another long delay when the Lynah Rink clock went out four minutes later.
Cornell's equalizer came following a Princeton icing late. The Big Red won the offensive zone face-off and held possession, working the puck to Mike Devin on the point, whose shot went through traffic and into the Tiger net.
In overtime Princeton fired four shots on goal and it was the fourth that got past Iles to give Princeton the 2-1 win. Ford collected a loose puck in the corner and drove to the net. His first shot was blocked but he got the second one past Iles to give Princeton the win. Cam Ritchie had an assist on the goal.
Princeton outshot Cornell 38-25 in the game, marking the first time this season that the Tigers gave outshot an opponent. Sean Bonar, who came within nine seconds of recording his first collegiate shutout, settled for the win following a 24-save performance. Iles stopped 36 shots in the loss.
Princeton was 1 for 9 in the game on the power play, while the Tigers killed off six Cornell power-play attempts.
The win moves the Tigers to 3-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the ECAC. After opening the season with six-straight games away from home, the Tigers play their home opener on Friday, Nov. 19 when Harvard visits Hobey Baker Rink.
