Dartmouth Completes Sweep in North Country
CANTON, N.Y. – With 13 goals on the weekend, head coach Bob Gaudet and the Dartmouth men's hockey team have their first-ever sweep of the North Country during Gaudet's tenure at his alma mater taking a 6-1 victory over St. Lawrence on Saturday night. The Big Green tallied a 7-1 win the night before at Clarkson.
With four goals in the third period, the Big Green had several of its players score in double-figures as sophomore Mike Keenan (Weymouth, Mass.) had two goals and an assist, Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) and Matt Reber (Edina, Minn.) each had a goal and an assist.
A swarming St. Lawrence team was all over netminder James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) in the early goings of the opening period but the junior netminder stood on his head and stopped every shot that came his way.
The Big Green, despite only getting 10 shots on net in the first, was the only team to get on the scoreboard early as Fleming, Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) and Reber teamed up for a bing, bang, boom power play goal at 12:00. Estoclet took a shot that was saved out to Reber in front as he passed up to linemate Estoclet. The right winger shot quickly down to Fleming who was waiting at the left side slot for the score.
Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) added to Dartmouth's total late in the second period, lighting the lamp for the first time this season. Keenan got the puck at center ice and passed across ice to Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) who put a shot on net that was saved back behind. Reeds was right there to gather the puck and wrap it around the post, sneaking it under Matt Weninger's stick.
A power play backhander by Greg Carey at 15:14 of the final frame had the Saints finding an answer for Mello as St. Lawrence kept the frantic pace going into the third period.
Keenan answered right back less then two minutes later with Dartmouth's second power play goal of the night when several Big Green players crashed the net but Keenan was able to jam the puck in on Weninger's stick side with his first collegiate strike.
Keenan added his second of the evening at 10:17 with a hard shot from the blue line as Dartmouth really seemed to have the momentum completely on its side midway through the period. That goal chased Weninger from the net in favor of sophomre netminder David Grilk.
The floodgates opened less than three minutes later as SLU's new netminder gave up the first goals of the season to Reber at 7:07 and then to Rob Smith (Brooks, Alta.) at 6:00 on the first two shots he faced in the contest.
Mello had another terrific night as the goalie had 27 saves in the contest and is now 2-0-1 on the season. Weninger and Grilk teamed up for 19 saves for St. Lawrence. The Saints outshot the Big Green, 28-25.
Dartmouth will be back in action next weekend traveling to Quinnipiac on Friday and then to Princeton on Saturday.
