ITHACA, N.Y. -- Mike Devin's goal with 8.2 seconds left in
regulation sent the game to overtime, but Princeton's Will Ford
scored his first career goal 2:35 into the extra session to lift
the Tigers over the Big Red, 2-1, in an ECAC Hockey contest on
Saturday night at Lynah Rink.
Dustin Mowrey picked up an assist for the Big Red (2-4, 2-2
on the goal, while Andy Iles stopped 36 shots in taking the
loss for Cornell. For Princeton, Eric Meland added a goal with
Michael Sdao and Cam Ritchie both picking up an assist on the
night. Sean Bonar earned the victory with 24 saves for the Tigers.
Cornell finished the night scoreless in five power-play chances,
while Princeton was 1-for-9 with the man advantage.
The Tigers got on the board first in the first period,
capitalizing on a boarding penalty on Cornell's Vince Mihalek.
Meland won the faceoff in the Cornell end back to Sdao at the
point, and Sdao's shot glanced off Meland and into the far post of
the goal, giving the Tigers the 1-0 lead with 2:10 to play in the
first period.
That score would stand into the third period, a strange period
that saw the two teams whistled for eight penalties in the
20-minute period. Cornell head coach Mike Schafer pulled Iles for
the extra skater with time running down in the period, and
Princeton tried launching the puck into the open net several times,
only to miss wide, with the faceoff in the Tiger end after an icing
call. With less than 15 seconds left, Dustin Mowrey scooped up a
loose puck on the faceoff dot after a draw and circled around,
finding Devin open at the blue line. Devin's wrist shot found its
way through a mass of traffic in front and beat Bonar with 8.2
seconds to play, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Princeton placed four shots on goal, with
the fourth one being Ford's shot off his own rebound that slipped
past Iles for the game-winner.
Cornell returns to action on Friday, Nov. 19, with a 7:30 p.m.
contest against Yale at Lynah Rink.
