Engineers Fall Short In Route 7 Rivalry Game
TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore netminder Keith Kinkaid stopped 19
of 20 shots to lead #12 Union College to a 2-1 win over #18
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in an ECAC Hockey game at
Messa Rink. The Dutchmen improve to 7-1-3 overall and 2-0-1 in the
league. The Engineers fall to 4-3-3 and 1-2-0.
Kinkaid (Farmingville, NY/St. Louis Bandits), who made several key
saves with the Dutchmen leading 2-1 in the third period, finished
with four saves in the first period, six in the second and nine in
the final stanza. One stop he didn’t make was an apparent RPI
goal with 7.6 seconds remaining in the third period that was
disallowed for interference with the goaltender.
RPI junior Allen
York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) stopped 18 saves
for Rensselaer.
With the score tied at 1-1, the Dutchmen took the lead with their
second power play goal of the night, a shot through traffic by
sophomore Jeremy Welsh (Bayfield, ON/Oakville Blades) with 12:21
left in the third period. Kelly Zajac (Winnipeg, MB/Salmon Arm
Silverbacks) and Mat Bodie (East St. Paul, MN/Powell River Kings)
collected the assists.
Union took a 1-0 lead at 13:34 of the first period, capitalizing
on a well-executed power play. Freshman Daniel Carr (Sherwood Park,
AB/Power River Kings) tallied his fifth goal of the season when he
scored into the top corner from the edge of the faceoff circle.
Classmate Josh Jooris (Burlington, ON/Burlington Cougars) earned
the primary assist and Welsh.
The Engineers tied the score with 4:25 left in the second period
when sophomore defenseman Nick
Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) scored on a wrist shot
into the top corner of the net just as an RPI power play expired.
Classmate C.J.
Lee (Staten Island, NY/Green Bay Gamblers) and Chase
Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) assisted on
the goal, Bailen’s third of the season.
Rensselaer, which was 0 for 6 on the power play, had a bid to tie
the score three-and-a-half minutes earlier denied by Kinkaid, who
kicked out a low shot by Patrick
Cullen (Washington, DC/Indiana Ice).
These same two teams play one another on Saturday night at
Rensselaer’s Houston Field House in Troy. Gametime is
7pm.
