RPI Comes Back to Earn Tie at Colorado College
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Tyler Helfrich and Mike Bergin scored third period goals and Allen York was outstanding throughout as the Rensselaer men's hockey team came-from-behind to tie #20 Colorado College, 2-2. The Engineers trailed by two going into the third period but Helfrich scored on the power play and Bergin with under five minutes to play. York finished with 34 stops for RPI, who were outshot 36-20.
Bergin slapped a low bullet from the left point past a partially
screened Joe Howe with 4:14 remaining in regulation, pulling the
Engineers even and forcing overtime.
Colorado College, which grabbed an early 2-0 lead on first period
rebound tallies by Rylan Schwartz and David Civitarese, squandered
opportunity after opportunity to increase the margin throughout the
game’s opening 40 minutes.
After finishing the first frame with a 13-1 advantage in shots on
goal, the Tigers were awarded five consecutive power plays in the
middle frame – including a five-on-three for 44 seconds
– and came up empty.
They failed on another chance in overtime to finish 0-for-7 with
the man advantage.
RPI wasn’t much better, at 1-for-7, but that single red
lighter by Helfrich was a big one that gave the visitors new life
at 3:28 of the third period. Chase
Polacek set up Helfrich with a centering pass from the
left side to pull the Engineers to within 2-1.
Sophomore goaltender Howe, who backstopped Friday’s 2-1
victory, made 10 of his 18 saves for CC in that third period.
