Rensselaer Falls in Season Opener
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Freshman Rylan Schwartz (Wilcox,
SA/Notre Dame Hounds) swatted home the eventual game-winning goal
at 10:42 of the third period to lead the Colorado College
men’s hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer, in the
season opener for both teams. With the win, the Tigers improve to
1-0, while the Engineers open at 0-1.
CC junior defenseman Gabe Guentzel (Woodbury, MN/Sioux Falls
Stampede) took a shot that caromed off end boards behind the RPI
net and directly to Schwartz who was crashing goal mouth from the
left. Schwartz one-timed a shot past Rensselaer junior netminder
Allen
York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) for the
Tigers’ second power-play goal of the evening.
Ryan’s brother Jaden Schwartz (Wilcox, SA/Tri-City Storm)
opened the scoring, on the man-advantage, at 13:22 of the opening
frame. The sophomore ripped a shot from the high slot that found
its way past York for the early 1-0 lead. Guentzel and Stephen
Schultz (Westbury, NY/Lincoln Stars) earned the assists.
RPI evened the score at 1-1 with just eight seconds remaining in
the second period. Sophmore Nick
Bailen’s (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) shot from the
right point found its way through traffic for the power-play tally.
The goal was Bailen’s first as a member of the Engineers.
The Engineers outshot the Tigers, 31-27, including 15-shot
outburst in the second stanza. RPI was 1 for 7 on the power-play,
while Colorado College ended up 2 for 9. York (0-1) finished with
25 saves, while CC sophomore Joe Howe (Plymouth, MN/Waterloo
Blackhawks) had 30 stops at the other end of the ice.
Rensselaer and Colorado College are back on the ice tomorrow
night, when they complete their two-game series (9pm). The
Engineers home opener is Saturday, October 16 against Bentley
(5pm).
