Raiders Suffer First League Loss
CANTON, N.Y. (11/6/10) – The Colgate
men’s hockey team dropped its first ECAC Hockey matchup of
the season with a 4-1 loss at the hands of St. Lawrence on Saturday
evening.
Colgate (2-3-2, 0-1-1 ECAC) got a goal from senior
Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.) with an assist
to sophomore Jeremy Price (Milton, Ont.). Junior
Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) tried to keep the game
to within reach with 20 saves in net.
St. Lawrence (2-4-3, 2-0-0 ECAC) swept its first home weekend of
the season to earn four points with the win tonight. Kyle Flanagan
led the way with a three-point night on two goals and an assist.
Greg Carey posted a two-point night with a goal and an assist,
while Sean Flanagan added two helpers for a pair of points. John
Weninger was impressive in net with 31 saves, but gave up a lot of
rebounds. Unfortunately, the Raiders didn’t capitalize on
their second-chance opportunities.
St. Lawrence earned the 1-0 lead with 12:18 left in the opening
period on Carey’s fourth of the season on the power play. The
assists were given to Kyle and Sean Flanagan. The goal came on the
first man advantage for the Saints in the game and Colgate
continued to struggle in northern New York on the penalty kill.
Overall with seven chances for the Saints and only one goal is
somewhat of a victory for the Raiders.
Colgate, however, answered with 1:31 remaining in the first with
Brisebois’ first of the year coming from Price. The
defenseman found Brisebois and set him up on a breakaway and he
beat the Weninger to tie the game at 1-1.
In the second period, St. Lawrence scored the lone goal of the
period as Wick gave the Saints a 2-1 lead. The Raiders outshot St.
Lawrence 11-9 in the frame and the struggles continued on the power
play, going 0-for-5 on their first five of the night.
St. Lawrence increased the lead to 3-1 halfway through the final
period as Kyle Flanagan added to his first point total with a goal
off of his own rebound. Flanagan put a shot on Evin, but the
Colgate goaltender couldn’t corral the puck and Flanagan slid
the puck in the net. Carey and Sean Flanagan posted the assists as
each put two points on the board.
The Raiders held a 32-24 shot advantage and went 0-for-5 on the
power play, while the Saints earned one goal with the extra skater
in seven opportunities.
Colgate will take on Princeton on Friday night in its next contest
as the Raiders host Silver Puck Weekend. The game is set for 7
p.m., while the home weekend continues on Saturday with a 7 p.m.
faceoff against Quinnipiac.
NOTES: Brisebois came through with his first goal after
six games of action … Price tallied his second assist of the
season … his other helper came in the win over Sacred Heart
... with the power play goal allowed in the first period, Colgate
has given up a PPG in four games this season and is 1-2-1 in those
games … the Raiders earn one conference point in their first
ECAC Hockey weekend after tying up Clarkson last night, 4-4.
