Tigers Fall to No. 5 Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (11/5/10) - An early two-goal deficit proved too much for the Princeton men's hockey team to overcome in a 5-3 loss at fifth-ranked Yale on Friday night. Princeton cut the Yale lead to a single goal on three occasions but could not get the equalizer.

Chad Ziegler and Chris Cahill scored goals on two of Yale's first three shots to give the reigning ECAC champions a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. Up by two, Yale went on a power play minutes later, but it was Princeton converting while shorthanded to cut the lead in half when Andrew Calof scored his first collegiate goal at the 7:02 mark with an assist from Jack Berger, his first collegiate point.

Yale regained the two-goal margin at 13:55 when Broc Little scored but the Tigers again trimmed the lead to one just over a minute later when Michael Sdao scored his first of the season to send the game to the first intermission with Yale holding a 3-2 lead. Matt Farris and James Kerr assisted on the goal, each earning their first collegiate point.

Yale scored the only goal of the second period when Cahill converted on the power play late in the period, but Princeton again moved within one early in the second period when Matt Arhontas scored on the power play. The goal was his third in as many games this season and was set up by Calof and Taylor Fedun. Calof also has points in all thee games this season and leads the Tigers with a total of four on a goal and three assists.

The Bulldogs closed out the scoring midway through the third period when Kevin Peel scored to make it 5-3. Princeton had a chance to trim the lead again late as Yale took three penalties resulting in a long two-man advantage for the Tigers, but Princeton could get no closer in the loss.

Princeton was outshot 46-30 in the loss, outshooting Yale 13-10 in the final frame, but outshot 36-17 over the first two periods. Alan Reynolds made 41 saves for the Tigers while Ryan Rondeau stopped 27 for the win.

Princeton is now 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the ECAC this season. Princeton will look for its first win of the season tomorrow night at Brown.
