Raiders Snap Skid by Blanking Black Knights
WEST POINT, N.Y. (12/4/10) – Junior
Alex
Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) made 24 stops for his second
career shutout to give the Colgate men's hockey team a much needed
3-0 win over Army to snap an eight-game winless streak.
Colgate (3-9-1) got three goals from three different skaters.
Juniors Corbin
McPherson (Folsom, Calif.), Nick
Prockow (Montreal, Que.) and Austin
Smith (Dallas, Texas) added the goals, while sophomore
Robbie
Bourdon (Montreal, Que.) increased his point streak to
seven games with an assist in the first period.
Army (4-8-1) saw Ryan Leets make 36 stops between the pipes, but
he took the loss.
Colgate struck first for the fourth-straight game on a power play
goal from McPherson at 7:17 of the first period. Bourdon fired a
shot that was saved by Leets and McPherson was there for the
cleanup. Bourdon extended his point streak to seven games with the
assist on Colgate's 10th goal with extra skater this season and
fifth in the last four games.
The Raiders had another great opportunity after killing off a
penalty and it came from an impressive effort from sophomore
Kurtis
Bartliff (Clinton, Ont.). He intercepted a bad pass from
Army and found himself in the slot, hitting a pipe and then getting
the rebound, which was stopped by Leets.
Colgate dominated play in the first period and held a 16-5
advantage in shots and killed off two power plays for the Black
Knights.
The second period was scoreless and was one of the longest of the
season. The Raiders had a 12-8 advantage in shots and Army had the
only power play of the frame.
The Raiders got the all-important insurance goal that they
desperately needed and it came from Prockow for his third of the
season. The play started with a push up ice by the Black Knights,
but the Army attacker over skated the puck and senior Austin
Mayer (Providence, R.I.) was there to scoop up the
turnover. He then skated in on a 2-on-1 with Prockow and put the
puck right on Prockow's tape and he scored. The goal came with 8:23
left in regulation.
Smith added the empty net goal with 18 seconds left to close the
scoring at 3-0. Senior captain Brian
Day (Danver, Mass.) and sophomore Thomas
Larkin (Cocquio Trevisago, Italy) were credited with the
assists.
Colgate outshot the Black Knights 39-24, while they also scored
the lone power play goal of the night as each team earned five
chances on the power play.
The Raiders will be back in action a week from today as they host
Niagara at 7 p.m. at Starr Rink.
