Team White Claims Victory in Union Scrimmage

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College men’s ice hockey team took the ice in uniform for its annual Garnet and White game, signaling the start of the 2010-11 season. Team White claimed a 6-3 victory. Union invited special guests behind the bench for each team.

Dave Kopecki and Bill Fox coached Team White, while Russ Fritz, Mike Payne, and Tim Meigher were behind the bench for Team Garnet.

The teams battled for five six minute periods and concluded with a five-man shootout.

The game remained scoreless until the fourth period, when Team White struck for three goals in the final four minutes of the frame.

At 2:10, senior Adam Presizniuk scored in the slot to give White a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Jeremy Welsh and junior Luke Cain picked up the assists.

With just under two minutes left in the period, Welsh netted a goal of his own, firing a shot low glove side for a two-goal advantage.

Cain would round out the scoring in the period with 13.7 remaining. Sophomores Jean Sebastian Bergeron and Ryan Forgaard recorded assists on the play.

At 3:30 of the fifth period, sophomore Greg Coburn tripped freshman Daniel Carr on a breakaway, giving White a penalty shot. Carr beat freshman goaltender Troy Grosenick with a low shot over the blocker to give White a 4-0 lead.

The teams then took part in the five-man shootout to determine the winner of the exhibition. Sophomore Wayne Simpson, senior John Simpson and senior Stephane Boileau all scored for Team Garnet, while Presizniuk and freshman Mat Bodie scored for Team White.

Team Garnet held a 25-14 shot advantage over Team White in the contest.

Notes:  Union men’s hockey will host the ICE BREAKER EVENT for Garnet Blades members and season ticket holders on Monday, Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Nott Memorial … The team met with the fans in attendance in the lobby after the game.
