Vesce, Moore Head to San Jose
Former League standouts Mike Moore (Princeton) and Ryan Vesce
(Cornell) are among a group of eight Worcester Sharks players
recalled by the San Jose Sharks, who prepare for the Western
Conference Finals versus the Chicago Blackhawks.
The group of eight, referred to as Black Aces, have been
recalled via San Jose to ensure the players are game ready in case
something drastic happens. The group is staying in San Jose, but
practicing separately from the big club.
In addition to Moore and Vesce, the group includes Benn
Ferriero, Alex Stalock, Derek Joslin, Frazer McLaren, John
McCarthy and Andrew Desjardins.
Black Aces is the term used throughout pro hockey for the
extra players who stick around at playoff time in case of injury.
It reportedly dates to Eddie Shore's days as owner of the
Springfield Indians.
It is not all that uncommon that “Black Aces” see
Stanley Cup playoffs game action. Just this playoff season,
Bryan Bickell from the Chicago Blackhawks and Trent Whitfield of
the Boston Bruins have seen game action.
