Hobey Watch: Preseason Edition

With six of last season’s 10 Hobey Baker finalists -
including all three members of the Hobey Hat Trick - out of the
college game, this year’s race for the nation’s highest
individual honor promises to be wide open.
In addition to the four returning Hobey finalists, the returning
All-Americans and the returning leading scorers who have to be the
favorites at this point, there will almost certainly be a David
McIntyre or Viktor Stalberg who bursts onto the scene from relative
obscurity or a Kieran Millan who soars above everyone’s
expectations as a freshman.
But without further ado, here are 10 players who should contend
for this year’s coveted hardware:
7) Zane Kalemba, Senior G, Princeton
–– Many of last year’s top netminders (Brad
Thiessen, Alex Stalock, Chad Johnson, Jordan Pearce, Ben Scrivens)
have moved on, leaving Kalemba, a Hobey finalist last season, as
the frontrunner among goalies. He ranked fourth in the nation in
goals-against average (1.82) last season and third in save
percentage (.932).
4) David McIntyre, Senior F, Colgate
–– McIntyre flew under the radar for most of last
season due to a combination of little preseason hype and little
national attention for an underwhelming Raider team. But after
recording 21-22-43 and being named a Hobey finalist and first-team
All-American, he’ll be in the spotlight from the get-go this
year.
