1960 Olympic Team Still Inspires

After the 1960 U.S. Men’s Olympic Hockey Team won the gold
medal at Squaw Valley, the players relished their accomplishment
but gave little thought to the impact it would have on the
sport.
“I don’t think we realized the impact we had on hockey
when we won it,” Bill Cleary said on Tuesday night in Boston,
when the 50th anniversary of the gold medal was celebrated.
“But when you look after that, 1960 generated a lot of
interest among a lot of kids.
“People ask ‘What did it ever mean to you?’
It’s 50 years later and people still talk to me about the
1960 Olympic Games. Obviously, we had some input especially in this
area [of southeastern New England].
