Weekly Release: Then There was One
ALBANY, NY -- Sole possession of first place in
ECAC Hockey belongs to Quinnipiac for the second consecutive
week. Winners of all six of their league games, the Bobcats
are the only undefeated team in league play (6-0-0). Clarkson
was another team that enjoyed a successful weekend in league action
picking up three points with a win and a tie over the
weekend.
Riding one of the nation's current longest unbeaten streaks at six
games, Quinnipiac picked-up four points in the league standings by
sweeping Colgate, 5-3 and Cornell, 3-2 on the road last
weekend. Brandon Wong had a goal and two assists to lead
Quinnipiac while Jeremy Langlois had his first multiple-goal game
of his career. Zach Hansen had a pair of assists while
Quinnipiac freshman Eric Hartzell stopped 27 of 30 shots in net and
also assisted on a goal in the win over Colgate Friday. Brian
Day tallied his seventh multi-goal game of his career, but it
wasn't enough as the Raiders saw their six-game unbeaten streak
snapped. Colgate starter Charles Long saved 22. The
senior was pulled for the last 8:02 of the second period following
the Bobcats' fourth goal. Bryan Bessette finished off the
second period with one save in his first action of the year in the
cage. Long returned to make six stops in the final
period.
With the win over Cornell, Quinnipiac sweeps its third consecutive
ECAC Hockey weekend to improve to 6-0-0 in conference play and
10-1-0 overall. Cornell goes to 5-2-0 overall and 4-2-0 in
league action. Sophomore Dan Clarke stopped 23 of 25 shots on
goal for the Bobcats, including the first 20 he saw in the game
until late in the third period. Three different Quinnipiac
student-athletes, including two freshmen, scored to lead the
offense. Zach Davies scored the game's first goal, while Reese
Rolheiser scored the Bobcats' last. Mike Atkinson also added
a goal for Quinnipiac. Sean Collins and John Esposito scored
in the third period for the Big Red as they attempted to mount a
rally. Ben Scrivens stopped 16 shots in the losing
effort. Cornell was held scoreless in five power-play chances
on the night, and Quinnipiac went 1-for-7 on the power-play.
On Friday Cornell jumped on Princeton 4-0 to gain a commanding lead
as senior Blake Gallagher had a pair of goals and junior Joe Devin
chipped in with a trio of assists as the Big Red would go on to
defeat the visiting Tigers by a count of 5-2 at Lynah Rink.
Nick D'Agostino scored the eventual game-winner, while Cornell got
additional goals from Joe Scali and Riley Nash. Cam MacIntyre
scored both goals in the third period for the Tigers, with Kevin
Lohry picking up an assist on both tallies. Cornell
goaltender Ben Scrivens picked up 28 saves on the night, while
Princeton netminder Zane Kalemba stopped 28 of the 33 shots he
faced. Cornell went 1-for-3 on the power-play, while
Princeton was held scoreless in both of its power-play chances.
Francois Brisebois posted his second goal of the game two minutes
into the overtime period as Colgate upset No. 19 Princeton 5-4,
Saturday evening at Starr Rink. Brisebois finished with a
career-high three-point evening, while David McIntyre connected for
two goals and an assist as well. Jeremy Price and Bourdon
each tallied two assists for their first collegiate multi-point
games. Princeton outshot the Raiders 47-27. Forward Dan
Bartlett netted two goal for the Tigers. Alex Evin made a
career-high 43 saves in the victory, besting his 41-save effort
last year versus Yale. The sophomore made 21 of his saves in
the second period. Alan Reynolds turned aside 22 shots in the
loss.
Broc Little helped Yale avoid a late-game rally by Brown scoring in
overtime for a 6-5 win at Meehan Auditorium in ECAC Hockey
action. The Bears, who erased a three-goal deficit midway
through the second period, got 13 saves (on 17 shots) from Mike
Clemente over the first 20 minutes before Anthony Borelli came on
to stop 23 shots. Junior Harry Zolnierczyk had two goals,
including the game-tying goal for the Bears. Yale outshot
Brown 42-22 and scored two power-play goals to move into a four-way
tie for fourth place in the league.
Three different Clarkson student-athletes accounted for the goals
and sophomore Paul Karpowich was stellar in net as the Green and
Gold snapped a six-game losing streak, won their first game of the
season on the road, and picked up their first points in ECAC Hockey
action defeating Dartmouth, 3-2. The Big Green outshot
Clarkson 37-29, but Karpowich was on top of his game making 35
saves, including 14 over the final 20 minutes. James Mello
posted 26 stops for Dartmouth. Clarkson was 0-of-5 on the
power-play and killed off six of seven Dartmouth power-play
chances.
Clarkson scored two goals 32 seconds apart late in the third period
to overcome 56 minutes of Crimson dominance and tie the Harvard,
2-2, Saturday night at Bright Hockey Center. Harvard outshot
Clarkson 43-20, including by a 29-7 margin through the first 40
minutes. Clarkson struggled on the power-play, going 0-of-7
with the man advantage. Harvard went 1-of-4 on the
power-play. Paul Karpowich notched 41 saves for Clarkson,
while Ryan Caroll made 18 saves for Harvard.
Senior goaltender Alex Petizian made a career-high 42 saves and
freshman defenseman George Hughes had a goal and an assist as St.
Lawrence skated to a 3-2 win over Harvard in a ECAC Hockey game at
the Bright Hockey Center on the Harvard campus Friday night.
Harvard held a 44-28 edge in shots and got power-play goals from
Michael Biega and Alex Killorn.
On Saturday Dartmouth put up a three goal lead on visiting St.
Lawrence and held on for a 3-2 victory, marking its first win of
the season. Forwards Doug Jones, Scott Fleming and Joe Gaudet
netted goals in the win. Jody O'Neill finished with 33 saves
for the Big Green while Kain Tisi had 40 for the Saints.
