Weekly Release: Three Teams Remain Unbeaten in League Play
ALBANY, NY -- After two full weeks of play in
ECAC Hockey action three teams remain unbeaten as Quinnipiac has
won four straight league games, Colgate has earned three wins and
one tie, and Union has recorded two wins and two ties on the young
season.
No. 20 Quinnipiac earned two league victories to position itself at
the top of the ECAC Hockey standings. The Bobcats, winners of
four straight earned a home weekend sweep over Harvard, (5-1) and
Dartmouth (4-2). In Friday's win over the Crimson, Senior
Eric Lampe had a hand in four of Quinnipiac's five goals, including
recording a hat trick in front of the sold-out TD Bank Sports
Center in Hamden. In goal, Dan Clarke stopped 27 of 28 shots
he saw for his third straight victory, running his record to 4-1-0
for the year. Kyle Richter took the loss for Harvard after
recording 28 saves. The following evening the Bobcats
defeated Dartmouth College, 4-2, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at the
TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. With the win, the
Bobcats run their league record to a perfect 4-0-0 while the also
improve to 8-1-0 overall. Sophomore Scott Zurevinski scored
twice in the Bobcats win and also assisted on a third goal.
Cam MacIntyre scored 37 seconds into overtime to lift the
19th-ranked Princeton Tigers to a 2-1 win over Dartmouth Friday
night at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton outshot Dartmouth in
each period and 41-24 for the game but struggled to put the puck
past Dartmouth netminder Jody O'Neill, who shut out the Tigers in
two games last season. Alan Reynolds made 23 saves for the
win, while O'Neill made 39 stops in the loss. The Tigers
would earn another point in league-play as senior Dan Bartlett and
junior Mike Kramer each had a goal and an assist in 3-3 overtime
tie with Harvard Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
Harvard outshot Princeton 37-31. Princeton senior goaltender
Zane Kalemba made 34 saves while Kyle Richter handled 28 of the 31
shots he faced.
No. 11/12 Yale erased two deficits to beat No. 4/3 Cornell Friday
evening before a sold-out crowd at Ingalls Rink. Brendan
Mason's slapshot from the top of the right circle with 4:25 left in
the third period broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Bulldogs to the
victory. Yale outshot Cornell 37-27 but was outshot in each
of the last two periods. Big Red goalie Ben Scrivens made 33
saves and blanked the Blue on all seven power-play chances.
Freshman Nick Maricic was in net for Yale, making his first
collegiate start. The rookie from California came through
with 25 saves, including 11 in a wild final period. The
Bulldogs came back from a two-goal deficient the following evening
to tie Colgate 3-3. Defenseman Tom Dignard has three points
with one goal and two assists. Raiders junior netminder
Charles Long posted a career-high save total, stopping 41-of-44
shots and Jason Williams tallied a two-point evening with one goal
and one assist.
Colgate picked-up two league-points Friday evening with a 5-3 win
at Brown as Corbin McPherson posted his first multi-point
game of his collegiate career, including scoring the eventual game
winning goal. Cornell was able to rebound the following
evening with Blake Gallagher scored two goals and Colin Greening
had three assists as the Big Red recorded a 6-0 blanking if the
Bears at Meehan Auditorium.
A four-goal second period paced Union to a 5-1 victory against
Clarkson Saturday Night at Cheel Arena. The Dutchmen, who
defeated St. Lawrence 4-3 Friday, completed a sweep of their North
Country opponents for the first time since the 2002-03
season. Union, which is now 2-0-2 in the league and 5-3-3
overall, are undefeated through four ECAC Hockey games for the
first time since going 6-0 in 2004-05. Union, which won its
fourth straight over Clarkson, outshot the Green and Gold 30-19,
including a 16-6 margin in the second period. Sophomore Richie
LaVeau made 25 saves for Clarkson. Keith Kinkaid posted 18 stops
for Union.
Five different players scored for Rensselaer as the Engineers
snapped a six-game winless skid (0-5-1) to the Clarkson by
defeating the Golden Knights 5-2 in ECAC Hockey action at Cheel
Arena Friday night. Clarkson held a slight 27-26 advantage in
shots. The Engineers went 2-of-6 on the power play, while the
Knights were 2-of-8 with the man-advantage. Sophomore Paul
Karpowich started in the Clarkson goal and made 14 saves on 18
shots through 35 minutes of play before leaving after RPI's fourth
goal. Classmate Richie LaVeau posted seven stops over the
final 24 minutes. Sophomore Allen York made 25 saves for
Rensselaer.
Stymied by Rensselaer goaltender Allen York in the second period,
St. Lawrence received goals from seniors Jeff Caister and Mike
McKenzie just 1:49 apart in the third period to earn a 2-1 ECAC
Hockey victory at Appleton Arena Saturday night, handing RPI its
first league loss. Kain Tisi picked up his second win of the
season in his second start after playing a period of scoreless
relief in each of the last two games.
