Weekly Release: Non-Conference Action Highlights Week

ALBANY, NY -- As the holiday stretch begins ECAC Hockey teams were looking to end the final full week of action on a high note and pick-up momentum that will carry into the busy months of January and February on the ice.

Union picked-up the lone victory in league-play last week in stunning fashion, scoring a 5-4 come from behind victory over Captial District rival Rensselaer.  Senior Mario Valery-Trabucco led Union with the 17th hat trick in program history. Union, which is 8-3-5 overall and 4-0-3 in ECAC Hockey, extended its unbeaten streak to nine games and remains the only ECAC Hockey team without a league loss.  The Dutchmen are now tied for third with Colgate in the standings with 11 points.  A well-rounded attack by the Dutchmen led Mario Valery-Trabucco and Luke Cain who each had a goal and an assist, in a 4-1 victory against the United States Under-18 Development team Friday night at Messa Rink.  Corey Milan turned away 20 shots in his first start since Nov. 7.  At the other end, Jack Campbell made 23 stops in the loss.  The Dutchmen registered a power-play goal and killed off all five U-18 PP chances.

Rensselaer would bounce back Friday evening posting a 5-3 win at Boston University.  The Engineers moved to the .500 mark at 9-9-1 as senior Christian Jensen's goal at 13:58 of the third period broke a 3-3 tie to lead Rensselaer's three-goal third period on its way to a 5-3 come-from-behind victory at Boston University Friday at Agganis Arena.  BU goalie Kieran Millan finished the game with 20 saves while Rensselaer's Bryce Merriam stopped 32 shots in the win.  The Terriers outshot the Engineers 35-25 for the game.  Rensselaer was 0-for-6 on the power-play, while Boston University was 1-for-6.

Despite Michael Biega's goal in the third period to cut a Boston College lead to one goal, Harvard's rally fell short to its cross-town rival suffering a 3-2 setback Wednesday evening.  Biega also assisted on Daniel Moriarty's power-play tally for the Crimson (1-8-2), while Ryan Carroll made 17 saves without allowing a goal in 36 minutes of relief goaltending.  Three different players scored for BC, which got 25 saves from Parker Milner.  Harvard held a 27-26 edge in shots and was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.  The Eagles were scoreless in three power-plays.

Brown scored three times in the opening eight minutes and never looked back, closing out the semester with a 5-2 victory over AIC (2-13-1) Tuesday evening at Meehan Auditorium.  Sophomore Jack Maclellan led the Bears with a goal and two assists, while senior Aaron Volpatti's goal at 8:01 of the first would stand as the game-winning goal.  The victory stretches Brown's current winning streak to five games, marking the first time that a Bears' hockey team has won five in a row since former Hobey Baker Finalist and All-American Yann Danis '04 was in net during the 2003-04 season.

Princeton earned a weekend split at UMass-Lowell last weekend split snapping a seven game winless streak by stopping UMass-Lowell, 3-2 Saturday.  The Tigers avenged a loss Friday, 4-1 at the hands of the River Hawks.  The Tigers scored the first goal of the game Friday, but then surrendered the next four.  Dan Bartlett scoring on a well-placed drag shot from a few feet out only 1:52 into the game.  River Hawk goaltender Carter Hutton stopped 29-of-30 shots on net, improving to 5-4-0 on the season.  The Tigers' Mike Condon made 23 saves in the loss, falling to 0-1-0.  UMass-Lowell was 2-for-3 on the power-play and blanked Princeton in six chances with the man-advantage.  On Saturday the Tigers received a career-high 45 saves from goaltender Zane Kalemba and the first two goals of Eric Meland's collegiate career helping them to a 3-2 win over the River Hawks.  Kalemba made a game-high 19 saves in the third period.  Nevin Hamilton stopped 27 shots in the loss.

Quinnipiac picked-up three points in non-conference action by tying Holy Cross, 1-1 on the road Thursday and downing American International College, 5-2, in a non-conference match-up at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. Saturday afternoon.  The win pushes Quinnipiac to 13-3-1 while American International falls to 2-14-1.  Quinnipiac remains perfect at home this season at 8-0-0.  Freshman D'Arcy Oakes scored his first-career goal while Greg Holt, Jean-Marc Beaudoin, and Brandon Wong each had a goal and an assist for the Bobcats.  Freshman Zach Davies had two assists in the win.  American International was 0-for-1 on the power-play, while Quinnipiac netted one goal with the man-advantage on two chances.

Sophomore Rob Madore made 21 saves to earn his second-career shutout and senior co-captain Brian Roloff scored a pair of power-play goals to lead Vermont to a 3-0 win against St. Lawrence in front of a sellout crowd at Gutterson  Fieldhouse.  Vermont outshot St. Lawrence 32-21 and picked up its second straight shutout against its former ECAC Hockey rival.  Saints' netminder Kain Tisi had a strong effort in net, stopping 29 shots, but no reward in the win column.

Dartmouth had a three-game winning streak snapped with a 4-1 loss to Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon in Thompson Arena.  All five goals were scored in the first period before both goalies buckled down and prevented anymore scoring.  Kyle Reeds got the Big Green on the board first lighting the lamp on the looked like he was going to help his team to an easy victory as he lit the lamp just a minute into the contest with the first shot of the game.
