Weekend Update: Cornell & Yale Move Into First-Place Tie
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Nationally ranked top-10 teams
Cornell and Yale each posted one-goal league home wins last evening
allowing them to jump into a first-place tie in the ECAC Hockey
men's standings. Both the Big Red and Bulldogs picked-up
their eighth conference win of the season with the victories.
The standings remain tight with a mere five points separating the
top eight teams in the league.
At No. 8/8 Cornell 2, St. Lawrence 1:
Patrick Kennedy scored the game-winning goal with 1:37 left to play
in the third period to give the Cornell men's hockey team a 2-1 win
over St. Lawrence Friday night at Lynah Rink. Joe Devin added
a goal with Sean Collins, Greg Miller, and Colin Greening adding
assists. George Hughes netted the lone goal for the visiting
Saints with Brandon Bollig and Travis Vermeulen both chipping in
assists. St. Lawrence goaltender Kain Tisi stopped 32 shots
in taking the loss. Cornell finished 0-for-2 on the
power-play, while St. Lawrence was 1-for-4 on the man
advantage. Big Red netminder Ben Scrivens stopped 15 shots in
the win to become Cornell's all-time career saves leader.
At Colgate 6, Clarkson 1: Brian Day scored
twice and Alex Evin turned aside 20 shots as Colgate completed the
regular-season sweep with a convincing 6-1 victory over visiting
Clarkson, Friday evening at Starr Rink. The six-goal outburst
was Colgate's highest goal total against the Golden Knights at
Starr Rink since a 6-4 victory on January 5, 1996. Robbie
Bourdon and Francois Brisebois each netted a goal and an assist in
the victory for the Raiders. The Raiders outshot Clarkson
44-21. Paul Karpowich posted 21 saves in 31:34 of action
before being replaced by Richie LaVeau. The sophomore saved
17-of-18 shots the rest of the way. Evin saved half of his 20
shots in the opening period. Colgate's power-play finished
two of seven, while the Raiders' successfully killed off five of
six Golden Knight man advantages.
At No. 6/7 Yale 4, No. 18 Union 3: Brendan
Mason's two goals were the difference as the Bulldogs took a 4-3
contest before a sold-out crowd at Ingalls Rink and jumped over
Union in the standings for a first-place tie with Cornell.
Yale found the net on just one of seven power-plays but got solid
goaltending from rookie Nick Maricic, who had 22 saves, stopped all
five Union man-advantages. Luke Cain recorded a goal and an
assist along the way for the Dutchmen. Between the pipes,
freshman Keith Kinkaid made 36 saves in his 14th start of the
season for Union. Yale outshot Union on the evening 40-25 in
picking up its eighth conference win on the season.
Princeton 2 at Harvard 1: Marc Hagel's late
second period goal proved to be the game-winner as Princeton skated
to a 2-1 win at Harvard Friday night at the Bright Hockey
Center. With the victory the Tigers took three of four points
on the year versus the Crimson and won at Harvard for the first
time since the 2006-07 season. Princeton goaltender Zane
Kalemba stopped 13 of his 34 saves in the final stanza including a
flurry late while the Tigers skated a man down. Harvard
outshot the Tigers 35-34 although Princeton outshot Harvard 15-11
in the first two periods. Conor Morrison scored for the
Crimson, and Ryan Carroll made 32 saves.
At Dartmouth 4, Quinnipiac 3: The Big Green
picked-up another league win and two points with a 4-3 victory over
Quinnipiac Friday night in Thompson Arena. Adam Estoclet
netted the game-winner for Dartmouth with less than five minutes
remaining in the contest. Dustin Walsh scored two goals for
Dartmouth, while his brother Nick Walsh added two helpers.
Greg Holt assisted on two of Quinnipiac's three goals. Eric
Lampe, Spencer Heichman, and Russell Goodman all scored for the
Bobcats. Jody O'Neill picked-up the win for Dartmouth
finishing with 16 saves while Dan Clarke had 16 stops for
Quinnipiac. The Bobcats outshot the Big Green by a count of
39-20 on the evening.
At Brown 4, Rensselaer 3 (ot): Aaron
Volpatti lifted the Bears to a thrilling 4-3 victory over
Rensselaer when he scored his seventh goal of the year just 47
seconds into the extra period on a 5-on-3 advantage. The win
is Brown's first over RPI since the 2004-05 season, giving the
Class of 2010 its first win over the Engineers. Harry
Zolnierczyk and Sean McMonagle each added two helpers in the win
for the Bears. Paul Kerins (2g-0a), Brandon Pirri (0g-2a),
and Chase Polacek (1g-1a) each had multiple point nights for the
Engineers. Mike Clemente finished with 27 saves in picking-up
the win, while Allen York made 21 for RPI.
