Weekend Update: Cornell Prevails in Top-10 Showdown
ALBANY, N.Y. -- In the six games that featured
victories for ECAC Hockey teams defenses and solid goaltending
stole the show. In these games the winning netminders only
surrendered a total of seven games in posting victories. Two
highlights of last night's games where Cornell blanking North
Dakota, 1-0 in non-league action and Harvard handing Union its
first conference loss of the 2009-10 season, 4-1.
At No. 7/9 Cornell 1, No. 6/5 North Dakota
0: In a battle of two of college hockey's two top
heavyweights, Cornell senior goaltender Ben Scrivens picked a great
time for his best performance of the season, stopping all 28 shots
he faced as the Big Red scored a 1-0 victory over visiting North
Dakota Friday night at Lynah Rink. Junior Mike Devin scored
the game's only goal early in the third period to lift the Big Red
to the victory. Scrivens earned his second shutout of the
season and 14th of his career. Aaron Dell, making his first
start for UND since Nov. 14, was strong in defeat, stopping 14 of
the 15 shots he faced. The Sioux killed all four Cornell
power-play chances while themselves going 0-for-3. The loss
was the first in non-conference play this season for North
Dakota. Cornell improves it overall record to 10-4-3.
Harvard 4 at No. 13/13 Union 1: Ryan Carroll
made a career-high 47 saves and Eric Kroshus played a part in two
keys goals to help the Harvard men's hockey team win its fourth
straight ECAC Hockey game and hand first-place, 13th-ranked Union
its first league loss, 4-1, Friday night at Messa Rink.
Kroshus set up a Conor Morrison goal and scored one of his own to
rally Harvard after Union took a second-period lead. Harvard
killed eight of Union's nine power-plays and was 1-for-6 with the
man-advantage. Carroll made 22 saves on the penalty
kill. The Dutchmen held a 25-19 edge in non-power-play shots
and a 48-25 overall advantage. Union's Keith Kinkaid made 21
saves. Jason Walters netted the lone goal for the Dutchmen,
extending his scoring streak to 14 games.
No. 5/6 Yale 3 at Clarkson 2: Yale had a
commanding 44-25 shot advantage but had to hang on for a 3-2
victory over Clarkson before 2,086 at Cheel Arena last
evening. The Bulldogs, who have won three of the last four,
improved to 11-4-3 overall and 7-2-2 in ECAC Hockey play by
converting two of seven power-plays while stopping Clarkson six out
of seven attempts. Freshman goalie Nick Maricic had 23 saves
for Yale, while sophomore goalie Paul Karpowich stopped 41 shots
for the Golden Knights in their failed upset bid. Forward
Broc Little recorded the game-winning goal in the third period for
the Bulldogs and added an assist. Linemates Jake Morley and
Adam Pawlick each registered a goal and an assist for Clarkson.
At St. Lawrence 5, Brown 2: Sophomore
forward Jacob Drewiske had his second two-goal game of the season
leading St. Lawrence to a 5-2 ECAC Hockey conference win over Brown
at Appleton Arena Friday night. Travis Vermeulen, Rick
Carden, and Matt Raley each recorded two assists on the evening for
the Saints. Kain Tisi made 30 saves for the Saints in his
eighth consecutive start while Dan Rosen gave up five goals on 34
shots before giving way to Mike Clemente who had five saves in 8:59
of action. Junior Harry Zolnierczyk led the Bears with a goal
and an assist, who dropped their fifth straight game.
At Rensselaer 2, Dartmouth 1: Sophomore
netminder Allen York made 27 saves, including the final 21 shots he
faced, to propel the Rensselaer men's hockey team to a, 2-1,
come-from-behind victory over Dartmouth, at the Houston Field
House. The Engineers saw junior Tyler Helfrich and senior
Paul Kerins record even-strength tallies to take a 2-1 lead with
10:47 to go in the game. James Mello finished with 19 stops
at the other end of the ice for the Big Green. Dartmouth
sophomore Connor Goggin lit the lamp for the first goal of the
game, his second shorthanded goal of the season.
At Colgate 4, Robert Morris 1: Jason
Williams tied a career-high with a three-point outing and Alex Evin
turned aside 25-of-26 shots to pace Colgate to a 4-1 victory over
visiting Robert Morris, Friday evening at Starr Rink. The
Raiders, who snapped the Colonials' four-game win streak, evened
their record to 9-9-4 overall, while Robert Morris dropped to
7-13-3. Forward Robbie Bourdon recorded a goal and an assist
in the victory for the Raiders. Sophomore Brooks Ostergard
allowed three goals while making 28 saves in net for the
Colonials.
Niagara 6 at Quinnipiac 2: Quinnipiac
dropped a non-conference match-up to Niagara, 6-2, at the TD Bank
Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. With the loss, Quinnipiac
falls to 13-10-1 overall while Niagara improves to 7-13-2 on the
season. Greg Holt scored his sixth goal of the season, to
break a string of four unanswered Niagara goals to open the game,
with 32 seconds to play in the second period. Bobcats'
freshman Ben Arnt scored his first-career goal with three seconds
remaining in the game. Niagara received a well-balanced
attack, as six different student-athletes found the back of the net
in the win. Quinnipiac went 1-for-10 on the power-play, while
the Purple Eagles netted one goal on two man-advantages.
