Weekend Update: Cornell Prevails in Top-10 Showdown

ALBANY, N.Y. -- In the six games that featured victories for ECAC Hockey teams defenses and solid goaltending stole the show.  In these games the winning netminders only surrendered a total of seven games in posting victories.  Two highlights of last night's games where Cornell blanking North Dakota, 1-0 in non-league action and Harvard handing Union its first conference loss of the 2009-10 season, 4-1.

At No. 7/9 Cornell 1, No. 6/5 North Dakota 0:  In a battle of two of college hockey's two top heavyweights, Cornell senior goaltender Ben Scrivens picked a great time for his best performance of the season, stopping all 28 shots he faced as the Big Red scored a 1-0 victory over visiting North Dakota Friday night at Lynah Rink.  Junior Mike Devin scored the game's only goal early in the third period to lift the Big Red to the victory.  Scrivens earned his second shutout of the season and 14th of his career.  Aaron Dell, making his first start for UND since Nov. 14, was strong in defeat, stopping 14 of the 15 shots he faced.  The Sioux killed all four Cornell power-play chances while themselves going 0-for-3.  The loss was the first in non-conference play this season for North Dakota.  Cornell improves it overall record to 10-4-3.

Harvard 4 at No. 13/13 Union 1:  Ryan Carroll made a career-high 47 saves and Eric Kroshus played a part in two keys goals to help the Harvard men's hockey team win its fourth straight ECAC Hockey game and hand first-place, 13th-ranked Union its first league loss, 4-1, Friday night at Messa Rink.  Kroshus set up a Conor Morrison goal and scored one of his own to rally Harvard after Union took a second-period lead.  Harvard killed eight of Union's nine power-plays and was 1-for-6 with the man-advantage.  Carroll made 22 saves on the penalty kill.  The Dutchmen held a 25-19 edge in non-power-play shots and a 48-25 overall advantage.  Union's Keith Kinkaid made 21 saves.  Jason Walters netted the lone goal for the Dutchmen, extending his scoring streak to 14 games.

No. 5/6 Yale 3 at Clarkson 2:  Yale had a commanding 44-25 shot advantage but had to hang on for a 3-2 victory over Clarkson before 2,086 at Cheel Arena last evening.  The Bulldogs, who have won three of the last four, improved to 11-4-3 overall and 7-2-2 in ECAC Hockey play by converting two of seven power-plays while stopping Clarkson six out of seven attempts.  Freshman goalie Nick Maricic had 23 saves for Yale, while sophomore goalie Paul Karpowich stopped 41 shots for the Golden Knights in their failed upset bid.  Forward Broc Little recorded the game-winning goal in the third period for the Bulldogs and added an assist.  Linemates Jake Morley and Adam Pawlick each registered a goal and an assist for Clarkson.

At St. Lawrence 5, Brown 2:  Sophomore forward Jacob Drewiske had his second two-goal game of the season leading St. Lawrence to a 5-2 ECAC Hockey conference win over Brown at Appleton Arena Friday night.  Travis Vermeulen, Rick Carden, and Matt Raley each recorded two assists on the evening for the Saints.  Kain Tisi made 30 saves for the Saints in his eighth consecutive start while Dan Rosen gave up five goals on 34 shots before giving way to Mike Clemente who had five saves in 8:59 of action.  Junior Harry Zolnierczyk led the Bears with a goal and an assist, who dropped their fifth straight game.

At Rensselaer 2, Dartmouth 1:  Sophomore netminder Allen York made 27 saves, including the final 21 shots he faced, to propel the Rensselaer men's hockey team to a, 2-1, come-from-behind victory over Dartmouth, at the Houston Field House.  The Engineers saw junior Tyler Helfrich and senior Paul Kerins record even-strength tallies to take a 2-1 lead with 10:47 to go in the game.  James Mello finished with 19 stops at the other end of the ice for the Big Green.  Dartmouth sophomore Connor Goggin lit the lamp for the first goal of the game, his second shorthanded goal of the season.

At Colgate 4, Robert Morris 1:  Jason Williams tied a career-high with a three-point outing and Alex Evin turned aside 25-of-26 shots to pace Colgate to a 4-1 victory over visiting Robert Morris, Friday evening at Starr Rink.  The Raiders, who snapped the Colonials' four-game win streak, evened their record to 9-9-4 overall, while Robert Morris dropped to 7-13-3.  Forward Robbie Bourdon recorded a goal and an assist in the victory for the Raiders.  Sophomore Brooks Ostergard allowed three goals while making 28 saves in net for the Colonials.

Niagara 6 at Quinnipiac 2:  Quinnipiac dropped a non-conference match-up to Niagara, 6-2, at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.  With the loss, Quinnipiac falls to 13-10-1 overall while Niagara improves to 7-13-2 on the season.  Greg Holt scored his sixth goal of the season, to break a string of four unanswered Niagara goals to open the game, with 32 seconds to play in the second period.  Bobcats' freshman Ben Arnt scored his first-career goal with three seconds remaining in the game.  Niagara received a well-balanced attack, as six different student-athletes found the back of the net in the win.  Quinnipiac went 1-for-10 on the power-play, while the Purple Eagles netted one goal on two man-advantages.
