Weekend Update: Cornell & Yale Keep Pace

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The top four spots in the ECAC Hockey standings remain intact, as Cornell, Yale, Union, and Rensselaer all posted wins in typical fashion last night.  Streaks, milestones, comebacks, a shutout and a hat trick provided all of the entertainment on a classic Friday in League play.

At No. 5/5 Yale 7, St. Lawrence 5:  Yale earned its fifth straight win as Kevin Peel had two goals and Brian O'Neill and Broc Little each had a goal and two assists as the Bulldogs remained in a tie for first-place in ECAC Hockey by defeating St. Lawrence 7-5.  The win gives Yale 28 League points (along with Cornell) and clinches home ice in the conference quarterfinals on March 12-14.  Saints' forward Travis Vermeulen had three goals and one assist while Brandon Bollig had three helpers in the loss.  Brendan Mason, Mark Arcobello, and Sean Backman had the other Yale goals while Jimmy Martin had two assists to help Yale split its season series with the Saints.  The home team outshoot the visitors 44-21.

At No. 16 Union 4, Princeton 1:  The Dutchmen earned their program-record 11th conference win Friday with a 4-1, victory over Princeton at Messa Rink.  Senior forward Mario Valery-Trabucco recorded his school-record 39th point of the season to help Union earn a first round bye in the ECAC Hockey postseason play.  Jeremy Welsh netted the game-winner for Union and added an assist.  Princeton outshot Union 36-29 in the loss.  Kevin Lohry scored Princeton's lone goal after the Dutchmen had built a 3-0 lead.  Keith Kinkaid made 35 saves for the win while Zane Kalemba stopped 25 shots in the loss for the Tigers.  The Tigers went 0-for-6 on the power-play, while Union was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

No. 10/10 Cornell 3 at Harvard 0:  Tyler Roeszler, Keir Ross, and Blake Gallagher each had a goal as the Big Red scored a 3-0, victory over rival Harvard Friday night at the Bright Hockey Center.  The win keeps Cornell tied atop the ECAC Hockey standings with Yale.  The victory was the sixth in the last eight conference games for Cornell.  Ben Scrivens posted 22 saves for his fifth shutout of the season and the 16th of his Cornell career, leaving him two shy of tying David McKee for the career lead in that category.  Harvard netminder Kyle Richter stopped 23 shots in taking the loss.  Neither team had success on the power-play on the night, as both teams went 0-for-2.

At Rensselaer 5, Quinnipiac 3:  The Engineers improve to 17-13-3 overall and 10-7-2 in the League and clinch home ice in the playoffs with a 5-3, win over visiting Quinnipiac Friday.  Chase Polacek and Jerry D'Amigo had a goal and two assists apiece to lead the offensive charge for Rensselaer.  Scott Zurevinski (2g-0a), Brandon Wong (0g-2a), and Jean-Marc Beaudoin (1g-1a) each recorded multiple-point nights for the Bobcats.  Bryce Merriam, who was making his first home start since November 27, stopped 24 shots for the victory.  He is now 4-3-0.  Dan Clarke had 16 saves to fall to 10-12-2.

At Brown 3, Clarkson 2:  The Bears swept the Golden Knights for the first time since 2004-05, as Chris Zaires ignited a Brown comeback with his eight goal of the year just 45 seconds into the third period, as the Bears came back to earn a 3-2, win over Clarkson Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.  The victory marks the first time this year that the Bears have earned a win when the opposing team scores first.  Linemates Harry Zolnierczyk (1g-2a), Devin Timberlake (0g-2a), and Chris Zaires (1g-1a) provided the offensive punch for the Bears.  Matt Beca netted the Golden Knights' two goals.  Mike Clemente finished with 23 saves, while Paul Karpowich stopped 31 for the Golden Knights.

At Dartmouth 6, Colgate 6 (ot):  In a wild game the Big Green was not able to hold onto two-goal leads on four different occasions, tying the visiting Raiders 6-6, in overtime.  Wade Poplawski and Brian Day each registered a goal and two assists for Colgate.  Scott Fleming found the back of the net twice for Dartmouth.  Bryan Bessette faced 17 shots in 53:49 of action, stopping 15 for Colgate.  It was his most action between the pipes since his 3-2 overtime victory over Quinnipiac last season at Starr Rink.  Before being pulled, Alex Evin made eight saves in 11:11.  Jody O'Neill stopped 35 shots including two in overtime for Dartmouth.  Colgate outshot Big Green 41-29.
