Weekend Update: Balanced Attacks Secure Wins
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The light ECAC Hockey men's
schedule last evening witnessed two solid goaltending performance
and opportune goal scoring which generated offensive charges to
deliver victories.
No. 8/9 Cornell 3 at Clarkson 1: Playing in
its first league game since a 2-2 overtime tie with Union on
December 5 and for the first time since January 3, Cornell handled
Clarkson, 3-1 Friday evening at Cheel Arena before nearly 2,800
fans. Defenseman Justin Krueger had a pair of assists and
eight different players recorded a point for the Big Red in their
win. Junior Ben Scrivens stopped 18 shots in picking up the
victory for the Big Red, improving his record to 9-4-2
overall. Forwards Colin Greening, Patrick Kennedy, and Locke
Jillson each netted a goal in the win for Cornell. Sophomore
Corey Tamblyn scored the lone goal for Clarkson, which got 20 saves
from sophomore Paul Karpowich (4-9-3) in defeat. Cornell went
0-for-7 on the power-play on the night, while Clarkson was held
scoreless in two power-play chances. Cornell held the
advantage on shots on the evening, 23-19. Cornell continues
its trip to the North Country Saturday night when it faces St.
Lawrence in a 7 p.m. contest at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y.,
while the Golden Knights welcome Colgate to Potsdam Saturday for a
7 p.m. start.
No. 15/14 St. Cloud State 3 at No. 17 Quinnipiac
1: In the first-ever meeting between the two schools
and a battle of nationally-ranked teams, No. 17 Quinnipiac lost to
No. 14/15 St. Cloud State University, 3-1, in a non-conference game
at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. The loss drops
the Bobcats to 13-8-1 while the Huskies improve to 13-7-3.
Freshman Russell Goodman scored his first-career goal to tie the
game less than four minutes into the second period for the
Bobcats. Senior captain Jean-Marc Beaudoin and Eric Lampe
assisted on the play. The victory was the fifth consecutive
win for SCSU, as the Huskies are a perfect 5-0 since the start of
the new year. St. Cloud State outshot the Bobcats 27-22, as
the Huskies were 1-of-4 on the power-play, while the Bobcats went
0-of-4. In the nets, St. Cloud State junior Dan Dunn improved
to 8-2-0 on the season with a 21 save victory. Sophomore Dan
Clarke had 24 saves for the Bobcats in goal, as his record dropped
to 8-6-1. Both squads will prepare for the second game of the
weekend series Saturday at the TD Bank Sports Center. Game
time is slated for 7 p.m.
At St. Lawrence 4, Colgate 0: Saints' senior
forward Mike McKenzie snapped a scoreless tie with his fifth goal
of the year at 9:18 of the third period to spark the St. Lawrence
offense, which would score three times in a span of 2:23 to come
away with a 4-0 win over visiting Colgate in a league play at
Appleton Arena Friday night. With the win the Saints improve
to 11-8-3 overall and 5-3-1 in the conference while Colgate is now
7-9-4 overall and 5-4-1 in league play. Saints'
linemates sophomore Brandon Bollig (0G-2A), senior Travis Vermeulen
(1G-1A), and senior Alex Curran (1G-1A) each recorded two points on
the evening. Senior Charles Long allowed three goals and
finished the evening with 22 saves before being replaced with 5:19
left by sophomore Alex Evin. Senior Kain Tisi was credited
with 20 saves on the evening for the Saints in earning the
win. Colgate will look to snap its four-game losing streak
Saturday evening as it plays Clarkson. St. Lawrence, which
has picked up at least one point in six of eight games, will
welcome Cornell Saturday evening.
