Weekend Update: Offenses Erupt
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Cornell, Union, and Yale each
showcased potent offenses last night helping them stay atop the
ECAC Hockey standings. Clutch play continues to anchor key
wins by teams in league action jockeying for postseason
positions.
At No. 6/8 Cornell 5, Brown 3: Colin
Greening scored a pair of goals and Riley Nash and Patrick Kennedy
both added a pair of assists as the Big Red scored a 5-3 win over
visiting Brown Friday night at Lynah Rink. Joe Devin, Tyler
Roeszler, and Blake Gallagher each added a goal for the Big Red,
with Nick D'Agostino, John Esposito, Erik Axell, Greg Miller, and
Brendon Nash each picking up a point with an assist. Ben
Scrivens stopped 24 shots in earning the victory, his 14th of the
season. Aaron Volpatti, David Brownschidle, and Chris Zaires
each netted goals for the Bears, while netminder Mike Clemente
stopped 33 Cornell shots on the evening.
No. 16 Union 5 at Dartmouth 4: Five
unanswered goals led to a 5-4 Union victory over Dartmouth Friday
night at Thompson Arena. With the win Union (16-7-6) remains
in a tie for first place in ECAC Hockey with a 10-3-4 record, while
Dartmouth (6-17-1) goes to 4-12-1 in the league. Freshman
Kyle Bodie completed the comeback for Union with only 2:45
remaining in the game. Union erased a 4-0 first period
deficit with three goals in the second and two in the third.
Adam Presizniuk, Andrew Buote, and Wayne Simpson each registered
two helpers in the victory for Union. Dartmouth had ten
student-athletes find their way to the score sheet led by Adam
Estoclet who scored one goal and added an assist. The
Dutchmen outshot the Big Green by a count of 43-19. James
Mello finished with 38 saves for Dartmouth, while Keith Kinkaid and
Corey Milan combined for 15 saves for Union.
No. 7/6 Yale 6 at Colgate 3: Sean Backman
and Broc Little had two goals each as the Bulldogs raced past
Colgate, 6-3, at Starr Rink to remain in a three-way ECAC Hockey
first-place tie. Yale outshot Colgate 39-26 and got a goal
and three assists from Andrew Miller and three (1g-2a) points from
Brian O'Neill to win for the third straight time. Billy Blase
stopped 23 of 26 shots to earn his fourth victory of the year in
his first road start of 2009-10. Francois Brisebois posted
his second career two-goal game for the Raiders in the loss.
Alex Evin stopped 33 of 39 shots thrown on net for Colgate.
Yale's power-play posted three goals in seven tries, while Colgate
went one of four with the man advantage.
Rensselaer 5 at Harvard 4: The Engineers
came back from two two-goal deficits, including a 2-0 score two
minutes into the game and scored four of the game's final five
goals, to move into fourth place in the ECAC Hockey
standings. Jerry D'Amigo had a goal and two assists, Chase
Polacek scored twice and Brandon Pirri had a goal and an assist to
lead RPI to a 5-4 victory at Harvard. RPI is now 16-12-3
overall and 9-6-2 in ECAC Hockey, which is good enough for fourth
place. Jack Christian, Michael Biega, Alex Fallstrom, and
Conor Morrison scored for Harvard with Morrison adding an
assist. The Engineers have 20 points, which is four behind
Cornell, Yale, and Union. Harvard falls to 6-15-3 and 6-8-3
and sit in eighth place with 15 points. Harvard held an
overall shots edge of 33-23 and was 1-for-3 on the
power-play. Rensselaer was 1-for-5. Starter Ryan
Carroll made four saves for the Crimson, while Kyle Richter logged
14. Allen York settled down in net for the Engineers stopping
29 Crimson shots.
At Clarkson 4, Princeton 3: Clarkson snapped
a lengthy winless (0-8-1) skid with a 4-3 victory over Princeton in
ECAC Hockey action at Cheel Arena Friday night. Dan Reed
(1g-1a), Matt Beca (1g-1a), Louke Oakley (0g-2a), and Nick Tremblay
(0g-2a) each recorded a multiple point night for the Green and
Gold. Princeton outshot Clarkson 33-30. Sophomore Paul
Karpowich posted 30 saves to pick up the win for the Knights.
Zane Kalemba made 26 stops for the Tigers. Dan Bartlett and
Mike Kramer each knotted a goal and added a helper for the
Tigers. Clarkson went 1-of-6 on the power-play while
Princeton was 1-of-4 with the man advantage.
Quinnipiac 5 at St. Lawrence 0: Senior Greg
Holt had a hand in three of Quinnipiac's five goals to help the
Bobcats to a 5-0 win against St. Lawrence at Appleton Arena in
Canton, N.Y. Holt had three assists, while sophomore goalie
Dan Clarke stopped all 23 shots from St. Lawrence as the Bobcats
posted their second straight shutout. With the win,
Quinnipiac extended its undefeated streak when leading after the
second period to 46 games (42-0-4). Kain Tisi made 18 saves
for the Saints, who only lost for the second time in the last 12
games at home.
