Weekend Update: Teams Showcase Firepower on Offense

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The story of the night was opportune goal scoring for ECAC Hockey teams, which witnessed 27 student-athletes record multiple points on the evening.  Three-of-the-nine league teams in action last night either surpassed or matched its highest goal output of the season in its victories.

No. 17 Union 7 at Princeton 2:  The Dutchmen vaulted into second place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 7-2 road win at Princeton.  With the victory Union extended its unbeaten streak to eight games in league-play (5-0-3).  The Dutchmen received two goals each from linemates sophomore Kelly Zajac and junior Andrew Buote to compliment tallies from seniors Jason Walters and Mario Valery-Trabucco and junior Stéphane Boileau.  The game marked the 16th time this season Union has scored three or more goals.  Princeton outshot the Dutchmen by a count of 40-33.  Union netted two power-play goals on seven opportunities, while the Tigers were blanked on all four of their chances.

At Clarkson 2, Alabama-Huntsville 1:  The Golden Knights snapped out of a six-game winless stretch (0-4-2), earning its first victory since November 20 in downing visiting Alabama-Huntsville, 3-1 in non-league play.  The Golden Knights received goals from newcomer Markus Piispanen, Nick Tremblay, and Matt Beca in the victory.  Clarkson out shot Alabama-Huntsville 34-21, including a 13-4 margin over the final 20 minutes.  Sophomore Paul Karpowich posted 20 saves for the Golden Knights.  Cameron Talbot finished with 31 stops for the Chargers.  Clarkson was 1-of-4 on the power play and killed off all six of Alabama-Huntsville's six man-advantage opportunities. 

Rensselaer 4 at No. 11/12 Quinnipiac 1:  The Engineers scored two shorthanded goals (Jordan Watts and Marty O'Grady) and a power-play marker (Joel Malchuk), while sophomore Allen York stopped 36 shots as the Engineers defeated league leader Quinnipiac, 4-1, in ECAC Hockey action.  Team points leader forward Chase Polacek collected three assists for RPI.  Bobcats' forward Scott Zurevinski joined Brandon Wong as the second Bobcat to reach double-digits goals with his 10th of the season less than five minutes into the third period.  Rensselaer finished 1-of-4 on the power-play, while the Bobcats were scoreless on six chances with the man-advantage.

At Dartmouth 9, Brown 4:  Forward Adam Estoclet's first-career hat trick along with Matt Reber's five points (1G, 4A) helped the Big Green to a 9-4 victory over Brown Friday night in Thompson Arena.  Dartmouth forwards Nick Walsh (2G, 2A) and Scott Fleming (1G, 2A) also contributed to the outburst on offense.  Bears' forward Harry Zolnierczyk netted two goals in defeat.  Mike Clemente stopped 17 shots for the Bears in 36:12, while Dan Rosen made 14 saves in 23:48.  Jody O'Neill finished with 22 saves for the Big Green, who out shot the Bears, 40-26.

St. Lawrence 7 at Niagara 2:  Saints' forwards Nick Pitsikoulis and Jeremiah Cunningham scored two goals each and netminder Kain Tisi improved to 2-0-1 in his last three starts as St. Lawrence earned its tenth victory of the season in a 7-2 win at Niagara.  The Saints out shot the Purple Eagles by a count of 38-21 on the evening.

At Minnesota 5, Harvard 2:  The Crimson surrendered four goals in the third period to the host Golden Gophers in dropping a non-league road game, 5-2.  Crimson senior Chad Morin netted two goals in defeat.  Kyle Richter made 40 saves for the Crimson, including stopping all 13 of Minnesota's shots in the second period.  The Golden Gophers held a 45-22 shots edge and got 20 saves from Alex Kangas.
