Weekend Update: Round One Underway

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Two road teams, Brown and Harvard, mounted comebacks to take game one of its first round matchups, while another road team, Clarkson battled back against rival St. Lawrence to send the game into overtime, but came up short in the extra session.  Quinnipiac used a forceful power-play unit to take a 1-0 series lead over visiting Dartmouth.  Overall the first round represented typical tight action in ECAC Hockey play with two games decided by one goal and the other two games by two goals.

At No. 5 St. Lawrence 3, No. 12 Clarkson 2, (ot):  Junior forward Aaron Bogosian netted the overtime goal passed Clarkson goalie Paul Karpowich with 10:09 gone in overtime to lift St. Lawrence to a 3-2 win over its arch rival in game one of a best-of-three ECAC Hockey playoff series at Appleton Arena in Canton Friday night.  The fifth-seeded Saints, 16-13-7, can clinch a trip to the quarterfinals with a win in Saturday's game two.  Clarkson can force a deciding game Sunday with a win in game two.  St. Lawrence dominated the game, outshooting Clarkson 50-23 in shots on goal, but Karpowich kept the Knights in it with an outstanding display of goaltending stopping 47 shots.  Alex Petizian made 21 saves to pick-up the win for the Saints.  The Golden Knights twice overcame one-goal deficits to force the overtime session by goals from junior assistant captain Brandon DeFazio and sophomore defenseman Mark Borowiecki.  Clarkson was 1-of-2 on the power-play while St. Lawrence was 1-of-4 with the man-advantage. 

No. 11 Brown 3, No. 6 Rensselaer 1:  After trailing, 1-0, to start the third period, sophomores Jarred Smith and Bobby Farnham each netted goals 1:13 apart during the first three minutes of the period to jolt Brown's offense.  The Bears would added another goal by Aaron Volpatti to seal the win with 1:05 remaining in the game.  With the win, Brown takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three first round series of the ECAC Hockey Tournament.  The Engineers' lone goal came on the game's first power-play of the game, as Paul Kerins popped in a rebound to gave Rensselaer the early 1-0 lead.  Bears' netminder Mike Clemente finished with 24 shots for the win, while Engineers' goaltender Allen York stopped 25 in getting the lose.  The Engineers went 1-for-5 on the power-play and Brown was 0-for-3 with the man-advantage.

At No. 7 Quinnipiac 3, No. 10 Dartmouth 2:  Quinnipiac seniors Jean-Marc Beaudoin and Eric Lampe scored their 100th career points on the same goal to help the Bobcats to a 3-2 win against Dartmouth in the first game of the ECAC Hockey Championship First-Round Series at the TD Bank Sports Center.  Quinnipiac takes a 1-0 lead in the series, and improves to 9-1 all-time in the first round of the ECAC Hockey tournament, including a 7-1 mark at the TD Bank Sports Center.  Two of Quinnipiac's three goals came on the power-play with Brandon Wong and Lampe finding the back of the net for the Bobcats.  Dustin Walsh and team leading scorer Scott Fleming scored the Big Green's goals.  Dan Clarke stopped 23-of-25 shots on goal for the win, while James Mello stopped 17 for Dartmouth.

No. 9 Harvard 4 at No. 8 Princeton 2:  Harvard scored four goals in a 10-minute span during the third period to rally to a 4-2 road win against Princeton in the opening game of an ECAC Hockey first-round playoff series Friday night at Baker Rink.  Daniel Moriarty, Danny Biega, Michael Del Mauro and Michael Biega scored to bring Harvard back from a 2-0 third-period deficit.  Crimson netminder Kyle Richter made 33 saves to outshine Princeton's Zane Kalemba who stopped 31 in the contest.  Princeton built a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes of action on goals from sophomore Marc Hagel and senior Mark Magnowski.
