Weekend Update: Round One to Yale
ALBANY, N.Y. -- In one of the first showdowns
between two league powers in the 2009-10 season No. 11/12 Yale
emerged as a true heavyweight again this season by stopping No. 4/3
Cornell by a count of 4-2. Colgate, Quinnipiac, and
Rensselaer continued hot play last evening as well, each having won
its third straight league contests.
At No. 11/12 Yale 4, No. 4/3 Cornell 2:
Junior Brendan Mason's scored with 4:25 left in the third period to
break a 2-2 tie leading the Bulldogs to a 4-2 win over No. 4/3
Cornell before a sellout crowd at Ingalls Rink in ECAC Hockey
play. Yale outshot Cornell 37-27 on the evening, including a
fiery of shots in a fast-paced first period by a count of
22-8. Yale forward Brian O'Neill led the offense with a goal
and adding two helpers. Forward Colin Greening and defenseman Nick
D'Agostino scored goals for the Big Red. Bulldogs' freshman
Nick Maricic, making his first collegiate start, gave up two goals
on Cornell's first three shots. The rookie managed to settle
down finishing with 25 saves, including 11 in the final
period. Big Red goalie Ben Scrivens made 33 saves and blanked
the Bulldogs on all seven power-play chances.
At No. 20 Quinnipiac 5, Harvard 1: The
nation's most productive offensive averaging 4.25 goals-per-game,
the Bobcats continued to show their firepower by netting five goals
in a victory over Harvard last night. Senior Eric Lampe had a
hand in four of those five goals as the Bobcats' cruised to a 5-1
win. Lampe's three goals and one assist helped the Bobcats
stay perfect in league-play at 3-0-0 and 7-1-0 overall.
Harvard drops to 1-3-0 overall and in league contests. In
goal, Dan Clarke stopped 27 of 28 shots he saw for his third
straight victory, running his record to 4-1-0 for the year.
Kyle Richter took the loss for Harvard after recording 28
saves.
Colgate 5 at Brown 3: Scoring the game's
first five goals the Raiders extended their unbeaten streak to five
games (4-0-1) handing the host Bears a 5-3 loss. Corbin
McPherson posted his first multi-point game of his collegiate
career, including scoring the eventual game winning goal for
Colgate. Five different Raiders netted goals and four
student-athletes recorded multiple-point nights. Colgate's
Charles Long saved 29 of 32 shots to improve to 4-1-1 on the
season. Bears' forward Jordan Pietrus netted two third period
goals to mount a comeback that fell short. Mike Clemente
saved 20 before being replaced by Dan Rosen at 3:09 of the third
for Brown. Rosen saved 10 in the final 16:51.
At No. 19 Princeton 2, Dartmouth 1 (ot):
Senior Cam MacIntyre scored 37 seconds into overtime to lift the
19th-ranked Tigers to a 2-1 win over Dartmouth Friday night at
Hobey Baker Rink. The Tigers finally found an answer to Big
Green netminder Jody O'Neill, who shut out the Tigers in two games
last season. Princeton outshot Dartmouth in each period and
by a count of 41-24 for the game. Junior goaltender Alan
Reynolds made 23 saves for the win.
Rensselaer 5 at Clarkson 2: Five different
student-athletes scored for Rensselaer as it snapped a six-game
winless skid (0-5-1) to the Clarkson by defeating the Golden
Knights 5-2 in ECAC Hockey action at Cheel Arena Friday
night. Clarkson, which suffered its first loss at home this
season, has dropped five straight games to fall to 3-7 overall and
to 0-3-0 in ECAC Hockey. Clarkson held a slight 27-26
advantage in shots. The Engineers went 2-of-6 on the
power-play, while the Knights were 2-of-8 with the
man-advantage. Sophomore Paul Karpowich started in the
Clarkson goal and made 14 saves on 18 shots through 35 minutes of
play before leaving after RPI's fourth goal. Classmate Richie
LaVeau posted seven stops over the final 24 minutes.
Sophomore Allen York made 25 saves for Rensselaer.
Union 4 at St. Lawrence 2: The Dutchmen got
goals from four different student-athletes to move to 1-1-1 in ECAC
Hockey play and 4-3-3 overall. Seniors Mario Valery-Trabucco
and Mike Schreiber joined sophomores Brian Yanovitch and Kelly
Zajac with multi-point efforts for Union. Brandon Bollig
recorded a multiple point night for the Saints on one goal and one
assist. Freshman goaltender Keith Kinkaid earned his first
career victory, stopping 20 shots. The Dutchmen finished with
a 29-23 edge in shots on goal for the game and were two for eight
on the power-play, while the Saints were one for five.
