Weekend Update: Bulldogs Win Showdown in League
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Scoring in bunches and at
opportune times helped teams earn valuable points in league play
last evening. Two of the highlights in conference play were
Yale flexing its muscles stopping Quinnipiac's eight game winning
streak and Union continuing to receive balanced play at both ends
of the ice extending its unbeaten streak to seven games (4-0-3)
with a home win over Colgate.
At No. 10/10 Yale 7, No. 4/6 Quinnipiac 4:
The Bulldogs netted four straight goals to erase a one-goal deficit
in the third period and earn a 7-4 win over Quinnipiac in a battle
of top-10 teams before a raucous sellout crowd at Ingalls
Rink. The win over the Bobcats marked the third over a top-10
team this season for Yale and ended Quinnipiac's win streak at
eight games. The Bulldogs outshot the Bobcats 41-22 and
converted two of seven man-advantages. Sean Backman and Denny
Kearney both had two goals while Brian O'Neill had a goal and two
assists to lead the Blue to its third win in four games.
Quinnipiac was led by senior assistant captain Brandon Wong who
turned in his second straight two-goal game. Freshman Loren
Barron and senior Greg Holt also scored for the Bobcats while Eric
Lampe had two assists in the loss. Three of Quinnipiac's four
goals came on the power-play, with Quinnipiac posting a 3-for-5
showing with a man-advantage.
No. 7/7 Cornell 2 at Rensselaer 1: Colin
Greening scored the game-winner and added an assist as Cornell
scored a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Friday night at the Houston
Field House in Troy, N.Y. Blake Gallagher also added a goal
and an assist for the Big Red in the victory. Junior forward
Tyler Helfrich netted the lone goal for the Engineers. Ben
Scrivens made 22 saves to earn the victory for the Big Red, while
Allen York finished with 17 stops at the other end of the ice for
RPI. Cornell finished one for three on the power-play, while
RPI went 0 for 5. Rensselaer outshot the Big Red 23-19.
At Union 3, Colgate 1: Union extended its
unbeaten streak to seven games with a 3-1 win against ECAC Hockey
foe Colgate Friday night at Messa Rink. Freshman goaltender
Keith Kinkaid also continued his winning ways making 31 stops,
giving him a 4-0-1 record in the last five outings for the
Dutchmen. Senior Mario Valery-Trabucco continued his assault
on the top of the scoring list with his sixth goal and team-best
15th point of the season. Junior Stephane Boileau and
freshman Jeremy Welsh also each tallied goals for Union. For
the Raiders Ethan Cox netted his first goal of the year in the
loss.
At Brown 3, Princeton 1: The Bears won their
third straight game of the season as sophomore Jack Maclellan
scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in the 3-1 win
over the visiting Tigers in league action. Senior Cam
MacIntyre got his fourth goal of the season for Princeton cutting
the lead to 2-1, but the Bears added an insurance goal to secure
the win. Princeton outshot Brown 37-30. Mike Clemente
stopped 36 shots for the Bears, while Zane Kalemba made 27 saves
for Princeton.
Clarkson 3 at St. Lawrence 3 (ot): North
Country travel partners Clarkson and St. Lawrence skated to a hard
fought 3-3 overtime tie at Appleton Arena Friday evening.
Sophomore forward Corey Tamblyn scored with 30 seconds remaining in
regulation to cap-off a rally for the Golden Knights and send the
game into the extra session. Saints' freshman defender George
Hughes had two helpers on the evening. All three Clarkson
goals came on the power play (3-6). St. Lawrence, which out
shot the Golden Knights 35-17, was one-of-five with the
man-advantage. Paul Karpowich finished the game with 32 saves
for the Golden Knights while Robby Moss had 14 saves for the
Saints.
