Meland's Five Points Lead Tigers Over UConn
PRINCETON -- A five-point performance from Eric Meland sparked the Princeton men's hockey team's offensive outburst in an 8-1 win over Connecticut on Monday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Meland had three goals and two assists in the win.
Meland was one of six Tigers to register multiple points in the win and 11 to earn points. His five-point outburst doubled his season point total to date. Cam MacIntyre and Michael Sdao also added two goals apiece in the win.
Princeton broke the game open with four goals in the opening period. Mark Magnowski opened the scoring at 6:14 when he scored on the rebound of a Mike Kramer shot for his fourth of the season. Meland made it 2-0 two minutes later when he converted on the power play by putting home a loose puck after Taylor Fedun point shot was blocked in front. Dan Bartlett won an offensive zone face-off to begin the play and was credited with an assist.
A second power-play goal gave Princeton a 3-0 lead at 13:16 when Sdao's blast from the blueline beat UConn goaltender Garrett Bartus. Magnowski and Matt Arhontas had helpers on the goal. The Tigers capped the period with a shorthanded goal from Meland off a feed from Sam Sabky. Brad Schroeder also had an assist on the goal as he started the play by clearing the zone.
MacIntyre, playing in his first game since early December, made the score 5-0 with a power-play marker 14 seconds into the second period that he one-timed off a pass from Meland. Derrick Pallis had an assist as well.
The Huskies got a goal back at 4:33 while shorthanded from Daniel Naurato, but the Tigers regained the five-goal margin in the final minute when Sdao's point shot went off a UConn defender into the net. Arhontas and Kramer had assists on the goal.
Princeton added two more goals in the third period. MacIntyre got his second 1:10 into the period after coming from behind the net to the top of the circles and scoring with a quick shot. Meland and Magnowski had assists on the goal. Meland then capped the scoring at 4:59 off a centering pass from MacIntyre.
Princeton outshot UConn 48-25. Each Princeton goaltender played a period with Zane Kalemba stopping nine shots in the first and earning the win. Mike Condon stopped seven in the second and Alan Reynolds had eight saves in the third period. Bartus took the loss with 24 saves and Brad McInnis made 16 saves in relief.
Princeton is now 7-10-2 overall. The Tigers return to action on Friday at Harvard.
