Scrivens Masterful as Cornell Blanks North Dakota
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell senior goaltender Ben Scrivens picked a
great time for his best performance of the season, stopping all 28
shots he faced as the Big Red scored a 1-0 victory over visiting
North Dakota on Friday night at Lynah Rink. Junior Mike Devin
scored the game's only goal to lift the Big Red to the victory.
Devin's goal came just 1:55 into the third period as the Big Red
scored to break the tie and held on for the remainder of the period
for the victory. Patrick Kennedy and Locke Jillson picked up
assists on the play. Cornell finished the night 0-for-4 on the
power play, while North Dakota was held scoreless in two power-play
chances. Fighting Sioux goaltender Aaron Dell stopped 14 shots in
taking the loss. Both teams also successfully killed off a
five-minute major penalty in the second period, with Cornell's Joe
Devin and North Dakota's Carter Rowney both getting the gate in
separate incidents.
Scrivens was solid throughout the game, stopping nine shots in
both the first and second periods before stopping 10 shots in the
third. Cornell was out-shot, 9-2, in the first period as the
Fighting Sioux came out flying. The second period was more even, as
North Dakota held a slight 9-7 edge in shots, but the score
remained tied at zero.
In the third period, Cornell got on the board by taking advantage
of a mistake by a North Dakota defenseman, pinching up into the
neutral zone. Locke Jillson slipped a puck underneath his stick to
spring Kennedy on a two-on-one with Devin on his left, and Kennedy
took the defenseman out of the play and slid a pass across the ice
to Devin, who slipped the puck into the net with Dell diving to get
to the back side.
The Big Red then held on to the lead through the third period,
including the final 1:19 when North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol
pulled Dell for the extra skater. With the extra skater on the ice,
the Big Red defense stepped up, blocking five shots and allowing
only one to reach Scrivens, which he stopped.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday in another 7 p.m.
contest at Lynah Rink to close out the two-game set.
