Williams Propels Colgate Past Robert Morris
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Jason Williams (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) tied a
career-high with a three-point outing and Alex Evin (Castlegar,
B.C.) turned aside 25 of 26 shots to pace Colgate to a 4-1 victory
over visiting Robert Morris, Friday evening at Starr Rink.
The Raiders, who snapped the Colonials’ four-game win
streak, evened their record to 9-9-4 overall, while Robert Morris
dropped to 7-13-3. Both teams will conclude the two-game series
Saturday at Starr Rink. Opening face-off is set for 7 p.m.
Williams finished with a goal and two assists which tied his
previous high of three points versus Canisius back on October 24,
2006.
In its first home game in two months, Colgate took a 2-0 lead into
the first intermission. The Raiders got on the board at 7:05 as
Christian Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) found Williams in front of
the cage and the senior jammed it by goalie Brooks Ostergard for
his fourth of the season to give Colgate the lead for good. Adam
Corrin (Winnipeg, Man.) was also credited with a helper for
starting the play in the offensive zone.
Down two men for 1:48 toward the end of the opening period,
Colgate’s penalty kill came up huge. Within a span of 36
seconds, the Raiders generated two golden scoring opportunities,
both on breakaways. Ethan Cox (Richmond, B.C.) darted in on
Ostergard with 4:50 left in the period and hit the right post.
Seconds later, David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) cruised in on
another breakaway, but the senior’s attempt was thwarted by
the sophomore netminder.
The Raiders eventually got that two-goal cushion right before
intermission. Williams set up Thomas Larkin (Cocquio Trevisago,
Italy) and the freshman ripped a shot from out top. With the puck
heading towards the net, freshman Robbie Bourdon (Ile Bizard, Que.)
deflected the shot by Ostergard for his fifth score of the year
with 31 seconds left in the period. It turned out to be the
eventual game-winner.
The Colonials pulled within 2-1 with a power play goal 2:38 into
the second as Zach Hervato banged home a rebound from in front for
his second goal of the season. However, the Raiders regained the
two-goal cushion at 9:35. Williams and Bourdon worked the puck to
Corbin McPherson (Folsom, Calif.) and the sophomore defenseman
blistered a shot from the top left circle over the outstretched
glove of Ostergard for his second of the season. The goal was
manufactured by a furious 45-second Colgate fore check in which
Robert Morris couldn’t clear its defensive zone.
Moments after Evin stopped five shots in a 30-second span, Colgate
finished scoring with one minute left. Cox got control of the puck
at center ice and moved toward an empty net. After his first shot
was blocked by a defenseman, the senior regained control of the
puck and fired it into the empty net for his second of the year.
Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) got credit with the assist to spring
Cox loose.
Evin stopped eight in the first; 10 in the second and eight in the
final period to win his second consecutive start. Ostergard
finished with 28 saves in net for the Colonials.
Robert Morris’ power play went one of five, while Colgate
went scoreless in two opportunities.
