Knights Fall by One at Brown
Sophomore goaltender Paul Karpowich put in another stellar effort and senior Matt Beca (Mississauga, ONT) scored twice, but three straight goals early in the third period powered the Brown Bears to a 3-2 victory over the Clarkson University Hockey team in ECAC Hockey action at Meehan Auditorium in Providence, RI on Friday night.
Named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the
Week, Karpowich recorded 31 saves to give the Golden
Knights a chance for their third straight win, but Brown (8-15-3,
6-10-3) was able to capitalize twice on the power play over the
final 20 minutes to pull out the one-goal victory.
After a scoreless first period, Clarkson took the initial lead with
an unassisted goal by Beca at just 71 seconds into the middle
frame.
Chris Zaires made quick work of a Brown power play early in the
third period, scoring just 45 seconds into the stanza to tie the
game. The Bears went on top just over a minute later with Jack
Maclellan's goal at 1:50. Harry Zolnierczyk put the home team on
top 3-1 with the eventual game-winner at 8:50.
With Karpowich out of the net for the extra,
Clarkson made it a one-goal game when Beca scored a power-play
marker for his team-high 18th goal of the season with 32
seconds remaining. The Knights pressured until the end, but could
not come up with the tying score.
Brown out shot Clarkson 34-25. The Knights were 1-of-4 on the power
play, while the Bears were 2-of-7 with the man-advantage.
At 7-21-3 overall and 3-14-2 in ECAC Hockey, Clarkson plays at league-leader Yale on Saturday afternoon with a 4:00 p.m. game in New Haven., CT.
