Saints, Cornell Battle to Tie
Goaltenders Kain Tisi of St. Lawrence and Ben Scrivens of Cornell stole the show Saturday night as St. Lawrence and the nationally-ranked Big Red skated to a 1-1 ECAC Division I tie at Appleton Arena in Canton.
Tisi, who stopped 47 of 48 shots in registering a 4-0 shutout of Colgate on Saturday and the 1-1 tie with Cornell on Sunday, helped the Saints pick up three points on the weekend. Scrivens, who made 35 saves in Saturday's game, helped flu-ridden Cornell, ranked eighth nationally in one poll and ninth in another, come away with a three point weekend as well. SLU is 11-8-4 overall and 5-3-2 in league play after Saturday's game while Cornell is now 9-4-3 overall and 7-2-2 in the ECAC.
Both teams had to battle adversity in Saturday's game as the Saints lost outstanding rookie forward Kyle Flanagan to a knee-to-knee hit on the second shift of the game and had to play short a forward for the rest of the night, and Cornell came in with several players still feeling the effects of the flu bug which hit the team earlier in the week.
"That was a tremendous effort on the part of both teams," said Saint coach Joe Marsh.
"We had to play down a man for the second night in a row and we were actually short two forwards for a bit in the second period when Alex Curran got hurt, but all of the guys did a tremendous job in terms of stepping up and giving it all they could give. While we would have liked the win, it was a pretty satisfying weekend in taking three points against two very good teams."
The Saints did everything but score in the first period as they outshot Cornell 19-8 and had an apparent goal waved off when it was ruled that it was batted in with a glove and not off a stick. The Big Red broke the scoring ice when Sean Collins scored at 18:49 of the first period, putting back a rebound of a shot by Joe Scali which bounced off a Saint defender in front.
"There was a lot of traffic in front and you certainly can't fault Kain on that one," said Marsh. "He had a huge weekend for us and is playing with a ton of confidence."
Tisi made his seventh straight start for the Saints and improved to 5-3-2 on the season with the tie.
St. Lawrence pulled even at 7:36 of the second period, scoring on their second power play of the game. Defensemen Pete Child and George Hughes worked the puck at the top of the offensive zone and Hughes slid a pass to senior captain Travis Vermeulen at the top of the right faceoff circle. Vermeulen's quick shot beat Cornell goalie Ben Scrivens to the upper corner for his ninth of the year and a 1-1 tie.
The Saints had an extended five-on-three power play in the second period, but could not take the lead as Scrivens and Cornell was able to kill off the power play.
Both teams had chances to win it in the third period as Scrivens came up big on Rick Carden and then stopped Nick Pitsikoulis on the rebound with 4 minutes to play in regulation and Tisi stopped Cornell defensemen Keir Ross' drive with 14.3 seconds to play in overtime and Saint defenseman Pete Child slid the rebound under Tisi's pad to keep it away from the Big Red. The Saints had a 3-1 edge in shots on goal in the overtime, but neither team could break the tie.
