Greening's Pair Lifts Big Red Past Brown
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Colin Greening scored a pair of goals and Riley
Nash and Patrick Kennedy both added a pair of assists as the
Cornell men's hockey team scored a 5-3 win over visiting Brown on
Friday night at Lynah Rink. Cornell improved to 14-6-3 on the year
and 11-3-2 in ECAC Hockey play, while Brown falls to 7-14-3 overall
and 5-9-3 in league action.
Joe Devin, Tyler Roeszler and Blake Gallagher each added a goal for
the Big Red, with Nick D'Agostino, John Esposito, Erik Axell, Greg
Miller and Brendon Nash each picking up a point with an assist. Ben
Scrivens stopped 24 shots in earning the victory, his 14th of the
season.
For Brown, David Brownschidle, Aaron Volpatti and Chris Zaires each
had a goal, with Jeff Buvinow leading the way with two assists.
Jesse Fratkin, Richie Crowley, Jack Maclellan and Marc Senecal each
had one assist for the Bears, who got 33 saves from Mike Clemente
in a losing effort.
Cornell finished the night 1-for-5 on the power play, while Brown
was 2-for-6 with the man advantage, including a 5-on-3 goal that
cut Cornell's lead to 3-2 midway through the second period.
The Big Red led throughout, as Colin Greening tipped home a shot
from Riley Nash at the 7:52 mark of the first period. Joe Devin
scored his seventh goal of the season six minutes later, as Cornell
took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Just 1:35 into the second period, Brownschidle cut the deficit in
half with his goal, his first of the season, fighting his way
through traffic and poking home a loose puck in front of the
Cornell net. Two minutes later, it was Roeszler firing a shot that
went through the legs of Clemente to put Cornell back up by two,
3-1.
Volpatti scored with four minutes to play in the second period with
the Bears on a 5-on-3 advantage, ripping a shot from the top of the
faceoff circle to the left of Scrivens to again pull Brown to
within one, where they would stand after two periods.
In the third, Greening put the Big Red back up by two with the
eventual game-winner. Brendon Nash got the first assist by his shot
from the point that was stopped by Clemente, but the rebound came
off to Greening. The senior's first attempt was stopped by
Clemente, but the second one found its way into the net for the 4-2
lead with 13:02 to play in the contest.
Brown wasn't done, though, as Zaires scored with 9:34 to play in
the game. Again with the Bears on the power play, Buvinow passed
the puck to Zaires who flipped a wrist shot through a screen that
found its way past Scrivens, again cutting the lead to just
one.
Brown head coach Brendan Whittet pulled Clemente for the extra
skater with 1:06 to play, and called a timeout with a faceoff in
the Cornell end with 26.7 seconds left. Cornell coach Mike Schafer
also used his timeout at that point, and the two sides battled for
the remaining time with the Bears having one shot saved by Scrivens
and another two blocked by the Cornell defense. On the second
blocked shot by Patrick Kennedy, the junior sent the puck out to
the neutral zone, where Gallagher fought off his man to get to the
puck and skated in and slotted the puck into the empty net with 0.7
seconds remaining for the final margin.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday with a visit from league
co-leader, Yale. The Big Red and Bulldogs will face off in a 7 p.m.
