Power Play Propels Engineers to Win
PRINCETON, N.J. - The Rensselaer men's hockey team scored four
power-play goals and sophomore netminder Allen York
(Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) made 30 saves in a 4-1 victory
over Princeton University, this afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. With
the win the Engineers improve to 12-10-1 overall and 5-4-0 in ECAC
Hockey. The Tigers fall to 6-10-2 (3-7-1 ECACH).
Freshman Jerry
D'Amigo (Binghamton, NY/U.S. National U-18 Team) notched his
sixth goal of the season - the first since returning from the World
Junior Championships - to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead at 14:17 of
the first period. The power-play tally came after a shot by
classmate Brandon
Pirri (Toronto, ON/Georgetown Raiders) was deflected below the
goal line to the right of the net. D'Amigo kicked the puck to
himself and buried a shot into an open net.
Rensselaer added a second power-play goal at 7:08 of the second
period. Sophomore Mike
Bergin (Ottawa, ON/Smiths Falls Bears) picked up a loose puck
at the top of the right circle, skated in and wristed a shot into
the top right corner of the net. Senior Paul
Kerins (Weston, ON/North York Rangers) picked up the lone
assist on Bergin's third of the year.
Freshman Marty
O'Grady (London, ON/Wellington Dukes) made it 3-0 at 1:27 of
the third frame - once again on the power-play - with the lone
assist going to junior Bryan
Brutlag (Lakeville, MN/Academy of Holy Angels). Brutlag threw
the puck on goal from the right point, handcuffing Princeton senior
netminder Zane Kalimba (Saddle Brook, NJ) into giving up a rebound
that O'Grady was able to stick home.
Tigers junior Mike Kramer (St. Paul, MN) recorded an even-strength
tally at 5:23 of the third, to bring the game to within 3-1. Senior
Mark Magnowski (Winnipeg, MB) sent a centering pass to Kramer who
picked out the top corner of the cage his seven of the season.
The Engineers final tally came at 17:13 of the final stanza. RPI
worked the puck the right circle where D'Amigo sent a cross-ice
pass to junior Chase
Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) for the one-time
finish, before Kalimba could stretch across the crease.
York (9-8-1) made 14 of his 30 stops in the second period, in which
the Engineers killed off five penalties. Rensselaer wound up 4 for
8 in man-up situations, while the Tigers were 0 for 7. Kalimba
finished with 15.
