Bobcats Fall to Union in OT
HAMDEN, Conn. - The No. 11 Quinnipiac University men's ice
hockey team lost to No. 17 Union College, 2-1 in overtime, in an
ECAC Hockey match-up at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.
With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 13-7-1 overall and 7-6-0 in ECAC
Hockey. Union improves to 12-4-6 overall while remaining undefeated
in ECAC Hockey play at 6-0-3 to move into first place in the league
standings.
Luke Cain scored the game-winning goal for Union in overtime,
slipping a wrap-around attempt past Quinnipiac's Dan Clarke
(Belleville, Ont.) to give Union the win. Mario Valery-Trabucco
scored the game-tying goal less than eight minutes into the second
period. Quinnipiac led early in the game, 1-0, on a goal by Eric
Lampe (Madison, Wis.).
Lampe became the third Quinnipiac player to reach the double-digit
mark in goals with his 10th of the season, a power play
marker with five minutes to play in the first period. Senior
captain Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alb.) and assistant captain
Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.) were credited with assists on the
play. Beaudoin hooked up with Wong who attempted a wrap-around but
was stopped by Union's Corey Milan. Lampe crashed the net and was
able to punch the puck past Milan to give Quinnipiac 1-0 lead
through the first period of play.
Union tied the game with a power-play goal at the 7:29 mark of the
second period when Jason Walters broke up a Quinnipiac clear and
put a shot on Bobcats' goalie Dan Clarke (Belleville, Ontario). The
puck dribbled across the crease where it was picked up on the far
post by Union's Mario Valery-Trabucco and punched home to tie the
game at 1-1.
Both teams played through a scoreless third period, sending the
game to overtime. For Quinnipiac, it was its fifth overtime game of
the year, while Union had played nine overtime periods heading into
tonight's game. At the 2:19 mark of overtime, Luke Cain scored the
game winner when he dug the puck out from behind the Quinnipiac and
attempted the wrap-around. Cain was able to stuff the puck between
Clarke's pads for the game winner.
Clarke finished with 30 saves for the game, including 10 in the
third period. His counterpart, Union goalie Corey Milan tallied 23
saves for the win.
Quinnipiac returns to action next weekend when they host
nationally-ranked No. 15 St. Cloud State in a two-game series on
Friday, Jan. 15 and Saturday, Jan. 16 at the TD Bank Sports Center
in Hamden, Conn. Both games are set for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
