Clarkson Wins in Overtime, Forces Game 3
Clarkson University sophomore Jake Morley scored on a breakaway 6:48 into overtime to lift 12th-seeded Clarkson to a 4-3 win over fifth seeded St. Lawrence in a ECAC first round hockey playoff game Saturday night, sending the series to a deciding game three on Sunday evening.
Clarkson, now 9-23-4 won for just the second time on the road this season and snapped a six game home unbeaten streak by the Saints against their arch-rivals. SLU is 16-14-7 heading into Sunday's series deciding game which will be the sixth of the season between the two rivals. Saturday's game was the third overtime game in five meetings between the two thus far this season.
"We knew going in that we were in for a battle...I've said many times that one of the toughest things to do is to end a team's season," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "I am sure tomorrow's game will be just like the first two. Clarkson played a very solid game and had another good night from its goaltender and we had a pretty solid effort as well."
Morley made a great play on the game winning goal as junior wing Brandon DeFazio sent a hard, rising pass down ice out of the Clarkson defensive end. Morley made a backhand catch of the puck about letter high, dropped it to his stick and outsped the Saint defense to the goal, putting his fifth of the season past Saint goalie Alex Petizian to win the game.
Clarkson scored the first goal of the game just four seconds into the game's first power play. Corey Tamblyn won the draw in the Saint end to Matt Beca and Beca hit defenseman Mark Borowiecki, who was rushing the net with a pass. Borowiecki buried his eighth of the year and second of the weekend from point blank range at 5:19.
The Saints tied the score at 3:25 of the second when Aaron Bogosian scored his second of the weekend, picking up a rebound of a power play shot by Kyle Flanagan and putting it behind Clarkson goalie Paul Karpowich. SLU took the lead just 1:25 later when the Saints' fourth line cashed in. Jacob Drewiske got the goal, his fifth of the year, on a shot which glanced off Karpowich's glove and tumbled into the net at 4:50 to make it a 2-1 game after two periods.
Karpowich had a big third period, making 13 saves, and the Knights kept battling back. They tied the game at the 8:21 mark when Nick Tremblay took the puck away from a Saint defender behind the SLU goal and fed Matt Beca, who scored his 20th of the year from right in front . The Saints regained the lead at 12:47 when Travis Vermeulen won a faceoff in the Clarkson end and Mike McKenzie raced to the puck, lifting it just under the crossbar for his 11th of the season at 12:47, but Clarkson tied it again when Tremblay scored his third of the year at 16:28, putting Tamblyn's rebound back into the net.
