Saints Showcase Youngsters in Win
CANTON. NY -- St. Lawrence University's men's hockey team showcased its younger players in Sunday afternoon's 2-1 exhibition game victory over the University of Toronto at Appleton Arena.
The only senior regulars who dressed for Sunday's games were goaltenders Kain Tisi and Alex Petizian as the Saint coaching staff used the exhibition, played after only one official practice, as an opportunity to take a look at several new faces as well as some others who do not generally see a lot of game time.
Sophomores Jacob Drewiske and Brandon Bollig scored goals, both on the power play and all three Saint goalies were solid in the win. Statistics from the game do not count nor does the win count in the Saint record.
Rookie defensemen George Hughes, Jordan Dewey, Matt Dyer and Sean Coffey made their intercollegiate debut and were joined by Canton native Kyle Flanagan, the only newcomer up front for the Saints. Senior Pat Kelliher, a three-year practice player for the Saints, saw his first game action while classmate Drew Weaver also played in Sunday's game. Juniors Bobby Torney and Matt Raley were also on the blue line with Torney picking up an assist on the opening goal.
The Saints jumped out early as sophomore Jacob Drewiske put away a rebound on a power play just 1:07 into the game with Torney and Ricky Carden assisting. It was the only goal of the first period, although the Saints did create some outstanding chances.
Toronto goalie Andrew Martin was outstanding in net, finishing with 33 saves including 18 in the third period and kept his team in the game.
Toronto tied it on a major power play goal by David Mooney 2:09 into the second period, but sophomore goaltender Robby Moss, who took over from starter Kain Tisi for the second period, kept the Varsity Blues at bay with four saves in the rest of the period.
Brandon Bollig put the Saint back in front on a power play from Mark Armstrong and Hughes at the 6:43 mark and Petizian made it stand up with six third period saves.
The Saints will open the season with their first official NCAA game against UMass.-Lowell at Nebraska-Omaha in the Icebreaker Tournament next Friday at 4:07 central time.
