Union Falls to RPI During Rivalry Weekend
SCHENECTADY, NY - Despite
goals from senior Mario Valery-Trabucco, junior Stéphane
Boileau and freshman Wayne Simpson, the Union College men's ice
hockey team lost a 4-3, overtime battle against Rensselaer in front
of a standing room only crowd of 2,327 on Friday night at Messa
Rink. The Dutchmen go to 3-3-1 on the year, while the Engineers
improve to 4-2-1.
RPI's Chase Polacek netted the game-winner at the 1:58 mark of OT
on a rebound goal on an initial shot from Paul Kerins. The goal was
Polacek's fourth of the season.
Union, which is now 4-1-1 against RPI in the last six outings,
trailed 2-1 after Polacek netted his first goal of the game at 2:57
of the second period.
A rebound goal at 5:40 of the second by Boileau evened things up.
The puck sat at the feet of RPI goaltender Allen York after he made
a save on junior forward Justin Pallos try. Boileau took a swing at
the rebound, stuffing it over the goal line for his third goal of
the season.
At 18:22 of the same period Trabucco unleashed a slap shot after
Boileau made a drop pass from Boileau, who caused a neutral zone
turnover to pull Union ahead 3-2. The goal was Trabucco's second of
the season.
RPI's Bryan Brutlag made it 3-3 on the power play with 2:54 remaining in the third
Union struck first with its fourth power-play goal on the year.
After junior forward John Simpson and freshman forward Jeremy Welsh
moved the puck around the offensive zone, they found Wayne
Simpson just below the left, face-off dot. Wayne hesitated, took a
stride towards the slot and slide the puck under the glove off RPI
goaltender Allen York at 16:10.
Junior goaltender Corey Milan turned away 20 RPI tries, while Allen
York made 19 stops. The final shot total stood at 24-22 in favor of
RPI.
Union heads into ECAC Hockey play as it welcomes Brown to Messa
Rink on Friday, Nov. 6 for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
