Beachell's OT Goal Lifts Princeton
PRINCETON -- Senior Tyler Beachell scored 1:16
into overtime to lead the ninth-ranked Princeton men's hockey team
to a 1-0 win over Brown on Friday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink in
the team's season opener.
Princeton controlled the tempo in the early going, outshooting
Brown 10-2 in the first period. The Tigers has two power plays in
the opening period, but both Princeton senior goaltender Zane
Kalemba and Brown's Mike Clemente kept their opponents off the
scoreboard.
In the second period, Brown outshot the Tigers, but Princeton had
the two closest attempts at goals as both senior Jody Pederson and
sophomore Marc Hagel had shots go off the iron. Pederson's hitting
the near post and Hagel's hitting the cross bar. Both teams had
chances in the final period with both goalies recording double
digits in saves to force the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Brown's Jesse Fratkin was called for an
interference penalty in the offensive zone. The penalty call sent
the ensuing face-off to the Brown end of the ice. Princeton took
advantage of the call as senior Kevin Kaiser won the face-off
back to Pederson at the point. Pederson took a shot that was
deflected in front and came to the far post where Beachell was
standing to send it in to the goal for the game winner.
Kalemba finished the game with 31 saves for the win and shutout,
while Clemente made 31 saves in the loss. Princeton outshot Brown
32-31.
The Tigers are now 1-0 on the season. Princeton hosts Yale
Saturday night at 7 p.m.
