Richter Stops 41 in Opening Win at Dartmouth
HANOVER, N.H. -- Alex Killorn scored two goals
and assisted on another, all in the second period, to lead the
Harvard men's hockey team to a 5-3 win against Dartmouth in both
teams' season opener Friday night at Thompson Arena. Kyle Richter
made 41 saves to win in his return to the Crimson goal crease.
Louis Leblanc, Marshall Everson and Daniel Moriarty also scored to
help the Crimson (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC Hockey, 1-0-0 Ivy League)
improve to 80-27-3 all-time in season openers and 5-0-1 in its last
six meetings with its travel partner. Moriarty and Everson added
assists, while Chris Huxley and Michael Biega notched two helpers
each. Richter made a number of impressive saves to stymie a rally
down the stretch by Dartmouth (0-1-0, 0-1-0, 0-1-0). Jody O'Neill
finished with 23 saves for the Big Green, which held a 44-28 edge
in shots.
Harvard controlled the play in the opening period, holding a 13-5
shots advantage, but Dartmouth had the only goal of the frame.
O'Neill had the game's first highlight, robbing Doug Rogers with an
incredible glove save following a setup by Conor Morrison. The Big
Green offense took advantage soon after, as Rob Smith scored from
the left side. Richter matched O'Neill with a brilliant sliding
save to stop a two-on-one break about three minutes before the
intermission.
It took just 87 seconds for Killorn and the Crimson to tie the
game in the second period. Skating up the right side, the sophomore
got a pass from Michael Biega and shot across the goal and over the
right shoulder of O'Neill. Huxley started the play behind his own
net. Dartmouth threatened to tie midway through the period, but
Richter again came up big, stoning Jason Bourgea.
Killorn's second tally came on the power play. He banged a loose
puck into the net after Huxley centered it from the left side, and
Daniel Moriarty deflected it. Less than three minutes later,
Killorn slipped a pass to Leblanc on the rush, and the rookie
rocketed a one-timer under the crossbar on O'Neill's blocker
side.
Everson made it 4-1 with a third-period goal on the power play. He
scored from the bottom of the left circle after Leblanc got a feed
from Rogers in the corner and tipped it out front. Everson then
assisted on the fifth goal, tipping a Chad Morin point shot to
Moriarty, who tucked in a backhand. Adam Estoclet later scored on
the power play to cut the margin to 5-2 and Joe Gaudet roofed a
backhand that was upheld by video review to cut Harvard's lead to
two goals at 13:31. Richter and the Crimson shut the door the rest
of the way.
