Dartmouth Downs Harvard in Non-League Contest
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-Dartmouth scored two goals in
each period to overcome two tallies by Daniel Moriarty and defeat
the Harvard men's hockey team, 6-2, in a non-league matchup between
the old Ivy League rivals Sunday afternoon at Bright Hockey Center.
It was the Big Green's first win at Bright since 1996, ending
Harvard's 13-game home series win streak.
Moriarty scored twice on the power play, with Alex Fallstrom and
Michael Biega assisting on both goals. Ryan Carroll made 34 saves
for the Crimson (1-6-2). Dartmouth got two goals and an assist from
Scott Flemming, four points from Adam Estoclet and 27 saves from
Jody O'Neill. The Big Green held a 41-29 shots advantage.
Dartmouth scored twice in the opening period. Fleming had the first
goal at 9:58, burying a wrist shot high to the blocker side on a
rush up the right side. Dustin Walsh made it 2-0 on another rush up
the ice, moving from right to left and tucking the puck between the
legs of Carroll. Each team had one unsuccessful power play in the
frame. O'Neill kept Harvard off the board with an outstanding save.
He got his toe on the puck to stone Marshall Everson after
Fallstrom threaded a pass through traffic to Everson at the right
post.
Harvard cut the lead in half less than a minute into the period on
Moriarty's power-play goal. He got the puck from Biega in the right
corner and passed to Fallstrom at the left point. The freshman's
shot was knocked down in front, but Moriarty stepped in to put away
the rebound. Dartmouth, however, extended the lead to 4-1 in the
final five minutes of the period. Evan Stephens scored the third
goal on a rebound in the slot, and Adam Estoclet tallied the fourth
with a shot into the top left corner on the rush just 37 seconds
later.
The Crimson again struck first in the third period, only to see the
Big Green again answer with two scores. Moriarty scored his second
goal at 3:35 of the period. He ripped a one-timer from the low slot
past O'Neill after Fallstrom got the puck from Biega and centered
it from the right corner. Fleming, however, netted his second goal
barely a minute later, and Josh Gilliam added an empty-netter in
the final two minutes. Harvard outshot Dartmouth, 14-12, in the
final frame.
