Cornell Scores Win Over Colgate
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Four different players scored a goal as the
Cornell men's hockey team closed out the home portion of the fall
semester with a 4-2 victory over Colgate on Tuesday night in
Ithaca. The win lifts Cornell to 6-2 on the year and 5-2 in ECAC
Hockey play, while Colgate falls to 6-4-4 and 4-2-1 in league
play.
Jordan Kary, Riley Nash, Blake Gallagher and Colin Greening scored
for the Big Red, which also got three assists from Justin Krueger
and two from Brendon Nash. Francois Brisebois and Nick Prokow
scored goals for the Raiders, with Thomas Larkin chipping in two
assists.
Cornell finished the night 2-for-5 on the power play, while both of
Colgate's goals came with the man advantage. Cornell goaltender Ben
Scrivens stopped 28 shots for the victory, while Colgate netminder
Alex Evin stopped 16 shots on the night for the Raiders.
Following a scoreless first period, Colgate got on the board first
when Brisebois tipped home a shot from the point by the Raiders'
Kevin McNamara midway through the second period. Cornell responded
at the end of the period with a pair of goals coming 1:13 apart to
lead, 2-1, after two periods. Jordan Kary scored the tying goal,
first ringing a shot off the post to Evin's right. The puck came
back into the crease, where it was shoveled back to Kary on the
right side of the Colgate goal. Kary wheeled around and fired
another shot, this time slipping through the legs of Evin.
Nash put the Big Red ahead just before the end of the second,
ripping a shot from the faceoff circle to Evin's right after
getting a pass from his brother, Brendon.
Cornell went to the locker room up one after two periods, but
Colgate needed just 1:40 of the third to tie the score at two. With
the Raiders on a power play, Robbie Bourdon sent a puck to the
front of the goal, where Prockow chopped at the waist-high puck,
bouncing it off the ice underneath Scrivens and into the goal. A
lengthy review of the play ensued, lasting more than five minutes,
but the ruling on the ice was upheld.
Cornell took the lead with 5:11 to play in the third period on
Blake Gallagher's power-play tally, getting a pass from Krueger and
ripping a shot from the slot past Evin. Colgate coach Don Vaughan
would pull Evin with 1:00 to play for the extra skater, with Colin
Greening scoring into the empty net with 4.2 seconds to play for
the final margin.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday when it travels to New York
City to face Boston University at Madison Square Garden in a
rematch of the last meeting between the two teams, two years ago at
Madison Square Garden. Puck drop at the Garden is scheduled for 8
p.m.
