Clarkson Nets Two Late, Ties Harvard
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-Clarkson scored two goals 32
seconds apart late in the third period to overcome 56 minutes of
Crimson dominance and tie the Harvard men's hockey team, 2-2,
Saturday night at Bright Hockey Center. Freshmen Louis Leblanc and
Marshall Everson scored for the Crimson.
Paul Karpowich notched 41 saves to help the Golden Knights (4-8-1,
1-4-1 ECAC Hockey) withstand a 43-20 edge in shots for Harvard
(1-4-2, 1-4-2). Bryan Rufenach got the puck out of a crowd behind
the net and scored Clarkson's first goal at 16:09 of the third
period, and Matt Beca followed by scoring from the left side after
an offensive-zone faceoff win by Tim Marks. Matt Borowiecki
assisted on both goals.
Karpowich then made four saves during an overtime power play for
Harvard. The Crimson outshot the Golden Knights, 5-3, in the extra
session after Clarkson held a 10-9 advantage in the third period.
Ryan Caroll made 18 saves for Harvard, which went a season-best 7
for 7 on the penalty kill and scored once in four power plays.
The Crimson dominated the first period to the tune of a 16-3
advantage in shots. Leblanc had the only goal, his third of the
season, at 6:04. He grabbed the puck off the stick of a Clarkson
defenseman at the right post and wrapped the puck around the back
of the net and in before Karpowich could slide across. Karpowich
made a few good saves, including an impressive glove stop on a
slapper by Pier-Olivier Michaud, to keep the Golden Knights within
a goal.
Harvard controlled the second period as well, outshooting Clarkson,
13-4. Everson's team-leading third power-play goal came at 4:03. He
banged in the rebound after Alex Fallstrom ripped a one-timer from
the left side off a cross-ice feed from Michael Biega.
