Gallagher's Pair Leads Big Red Past Princeton
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior Blake Gallagher had a pair of goals and
junior Joe Devin chipped in with a trio of assists as the Cornell
men's hockey team skated to a 5-2 victory over Princeton on Friday
night at Lynah Rink in Ithaca. Cornell led, 4-0, after two periods
and claimed the win to improve to 5-1 on the year and 4-1 in ECAC
Hockey action.
Nick D'Agostino scored the eventual game-winner, while Cornell got
additional goals from Joe Scali and Riley Nash. Gallagher, Colin
Greening, Sean Whitney and Brendon Nash each chipped in a single
assist for the Big Red on the night.
Cam MacIntyre scored both goals in the third period for the Tigers
(3-3-1, 2-2-1 ECAC Hockey), with Kevin Lohry picking up an assist
on both tallies. Dan Bartlett also added an assist for
Princeton.
Cornell goaltender Ben Scrivens picked up 28 saves on the night,
while Princeton netminder Zane Kalemba stopped 28 of the 33 shots
he faced. Cornell went 1-for-3 on the power play, while Princeton
was held scoreless in both of its power-play chances.
Gallagher got the Big Red on the board just 1:14 into the game,
banging home a rebound of a shot by Greening to stake Cornell to
the early lead. Gallagher made it 2-0 with 39 seconds left in the
period when Joe Devin worked the puck off the side boards to the
senior, who used a Princeton defenseman as a screen before ripping
a shot off the goalpost and into the goal past Kalemba.
It took the Big Red just 1:22 into the second period to make the
lead 3-0, as a break down the ice led to Gallagher finding
D'Agostino streaking in the slot. The pass to the freshman
defenseman was spot-on, as D'Agostino buried the shot for the 3-0
lead. Four and a half minutes later, Scali picked up a loose puck
in the Princeton zone and skated in on Kalemba, ripping a shot over
the glove side for the 4-0 lead.
Princeton wouldn't go away quietly, however, as MacIntyre scored a
goal in transition to put Princeton on the scoreboard. A shot in
the Cornell end kicked out to Lohry, who skated ahead with it and
put the puck on the tape of MacIntyre, who flipped the puck into
the goal before crashing into the net. A brief review of the play
ensued, with the play being confirmed at the 3:57 mark of the third
period.
Just over four minutes later, it was MacIntyre again, scoring from
nearly the exact same spot on the ice, this time taking the puck
from Dan Bartlett and beating Scrivens over his shoulder to cut
Cornell's lead in half. Cornell finally sealed the game away on
Nash's power-play tally with 5:24 to play, as Whitney found the
senior open on the faceoff dot to Kalemba's right, and the junior's
shot found the back of the net for the final margin.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday when it plays host to
Quinnipiac in a 7 p.m. contest at Lynah Rink.
