Saints Rally, Stun Niagara
CANTON, NY -- The line of freshman Kyle Flanagan and seniors Jeremiah Cunningham and Mike McKenzie showed a ton of potential in the first three games of St. Lawrence University's 2009-10 hockey season.
Saturday night it exploded in the final 30 minutes of a game against Niagara University and brought the Saints back from 3-0 deficit to a 4-3 win to complete a weekend sweep.
Flanagan scored his second goal of the night with 14.5 seconds to go in regulation to complete the comeback and give sophomore goaltender Robby Moss his second win in as many nights. Rookie defenseman George Hughes started the game winning play as he sent Flanagan into the Niagara zone with the clock winding down and the game tied at 3-3. Flanagan cut between the faceoff circles and snapped a wrist shot which caught the lower left corner of the net, beating Niagara goalie Chris Noonan to the stick side.
"We have known all along that Kyle is a very talented player," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "He has been playing very well and it was just a matter of time before things clicked for that line. You've got Kyle's playmaking and passing abilities, great speed on the part of Cunningham and McKenzie is a natural goal scorer. They certainly put on a show in the latter stages of the game tonight."
Niagara senior wing Egor Mironov scored the lone goal in a fairly even first period as he tipped a shot from the center point by Jim Burichin, redirecting it past Moss at the 7:35 mark.
The Purple Eagles made it a 2-0 game 4:22 into the second period as Tyler Gotto was credited with his second goal of the season as a shot from the point deflected off a Saint defender's stick and over Moss' shoulder and into the upper corner of the net. Niagara made it a 3-0 game at 17:15 when Jeff Hannan finished off a two-on-one with his first collegiate goal, tucking a rebound of a shot by Dan Baco back past a sprawled Moss.
"Robby was unlucky on the first two and the third was a two-on-one, so you really can't fault his play tonight," Marsh added. "He had an outstanding weekend and that gives us a great situation as far as our goaltending depth is concerned."
The Saints, who had their chances in the first two periods, finally got a shot past Niagara's Chris Noonan at the 18:53 mark of the second as Flanagan scored his second of the season on a power play, cutting across the goal mouth and tucking the puck behind the Niagara goalie to make it 3-1 after two.
The Saints pulled to within a goal at 9:33 of the third period as Flanagan set up Mike McKenzie who was all alone in front and the senior snapped a shot inside the left post for his first of the season. The Saints tied it on a power play at 17:18 as Flanagan set up behind the net and fed Cunningham who chipped the puck over Noonan's shoulder for his first of the season to tie the game at 3-3.
Moss finished with 21 saves to complete the weekend sweep while Noonan had 28 stops for Niagara.
The Saints had an excellent night on special teams against the Purple Eagles, going two for five on the power play and killing all three Niagara power plays with just a total of three shots allowed.
