RPI Earns Tie with Alas. Fairbanks
FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Sophomore netminder Allen York (Wetaskiwin,
AB/Camrose Kodiaks) made 33 saves and freshman Brandon Pirri
(Toronto, ON/Georgetown Raiders) scored his first collegiate goal
to lead the Rensselaer men's hockey team to a 1-1 tie with
17th-ranked Alaska-Fairbanks, this evening at Carlson Center. With
the draw the Engineers move to 1-2-1 on the season, while the
Nanooks are now 3-0-1.
Officially a tie, the Nanooks took the Brice Alaska Goal Rush
tournament victory with a 1-0 shootout win.
After a scoreless opening frame, Pirri got Rensselaer on the board
at the 9:13 mark of the second period, stuffing the puck home from
just outside the crease. Classmate Marty O'Grady (London,
ON/Wellington Dukes) and junior Bryan Brutlag (Lakeville, MN/Holy
Angels) earned the assists, working the puck to the net for Pirri
to finish.
The Engineers outshot Alaska 17-13 over the first two periods of
play, but the Nanooks turned up the pressure in the final 20
minutes, outshooting Rensselaer, 18-2.
Alaska pulled even on a power-play goal with just 1:36 to play in
regulation, evening the score at 1-1. Sophomore Joe Sova's (Berwyn,
IL/Omaha) shot from the left point found its way through a screen
and past York, glove side. Assists went to sophomore Scott Enders
(Edmonton, AB/Lloydminster) and senior Brandon Knelson (Three
Hills, AB/Drumheller).
20 of York's 33 saves came in the third period and overtime helping
him earn All-Tournament honors. Alaska sophomore goaltender Scott
Greenham (Addison, ON/Oakville) finished with 23 stops at the other
end. RPI went 0 for 3 on the power-play, while Alaska finished 1
for 7.
The Engineers return to action on Friday night, when they host
Sacred Heart to kick-off Family Weekend at the Houston Field House
(7pm).
