Raiders Settle for Tie in Home Opener
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Kurtis Bartliff
(Clinton, Ont.) notched his first collegiate goal as Colgate and
15th-ranked Nebraska Omaha battled to a 1-1 tie, Friday night in
men's hockey action at Starr Rink.
With the tie, the Raiders have now gone into overtime in nine of
their last 10 games dating back to last year. The end result
also extends Colgate's streak to 14 consecutive games determined by
one goal or less. The last time Colgate wasn't in a game of
this type was a 4-2 loss at St. Lawrence on January 31, 2009.
The Mavericks, now 2-0-1 overall, drew first blood in the tight
affair on a three on two. Dan Swanson dropped the puck off to
Joey Martin, who sent a wrist shot over the blocker of Colgate
goalie Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) for his first of the year at
8:47 of the opening period.
The Raiders knotted the game at 4:29 of the second as David
McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) sent a puck from behind the goal line
across the crease in front to Bartliff, who banged a shot from the
left post in behind John Faulkner.
Both teams had golden opportunities on the power play down the
stretch, but couldn't capitalize. Colgate successfully killed
off a Maverick power play with 2:23 left in the third period, while
UNO returned the favor in the closing 1:22 of overtime.
The Raiders outshot the Mavericks 28-24 on the evening. Evin
turned aside 23 of 24 shots in the outing, while Faulkner saved
27.
Both teams were shutout on the power play. Colgate went
scoreless in six attempts, while UNO failed to score in five
tries. By shutting down the opposition on the power play, the
Raiders' penalty kill has successfully killed off the first 15 of
the season and the last 17 dating back to game three of the opening
round of the ECAC Hockey Tournament against Quinnipiac.
Colgate and Nebraska Omaha will conclude the two game series
Saturday evening. Opening face off is scheduled for a 7 p.m.
start.
