Saints Blanked at Vermont

Saturday night's St. Lawrence University hockey game at Vermont was  all too typical of the career of Saint senior goalie Kain Tisi...a strong effort in net, but no reward in the win column.

Tisi turned in an outstanding effort in goal, making 29 saves, but his teammates could not give him any offensive support as Vermont scored two goals in the final five minutes of the game, the second on an empty net, to record a 3-0 win over the Saints at a sold-out Gutterson Field House. Vermont outshot the Saints 32-21 with sophomore goaltender Rob Madore making 21 saves to record the shutout.

It was the second straight shutout for the Catamounts over the Saints at Gutterson as Vermont won the Catamount Cup final 4-0 over the Saints in SLU's last visit to Burlington. The Saints fall to 8-7-2 heading into a break for exams and the holidays while Vermont is now 7-6-2

"From the standpoint of defense and goaltending, it was a pretty good game for us," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "We didn't get a lot of chances offensively and I thought we pressed a little bit at times when we had the puck in their end. Vermont did an outstanding job defensively, and kept us from getting a lot of second and third chances."

The Catamounts scored the lone goal of the period with 57.3 seconds to play as David Pacan took the puck along the end boards and sent it back toward the point. Junior defenseman Josh Burrows picked it up near the top of the faceoff circle and snapped a shot toward net which hit the stick of a Saint defenseman and snuck inside the left post for Burrows' second goal of the season.

Neither team scored in the second period, although the Saints came close to tying the score when Alex Curran's wrister with 4:20 left in the period clanged off the crossbar. Vermont held a 10-7 edge in shots on goal in the second, helped along by a pair of power play opportunities, but both teams continued to have problems finding the back of the net against solid defensive efforts.

It stayed a 1-0 game until just 11 seconds remained in Vermont's fourth power play chance of the night.  Senior center Brian Roloff cruised down the middle of the ice and defenseman Kyle Medvec chased the puck down along the end boards and fed Roloff for his fourth goal of the season on a point blank bid at the 15 minute mark.

Roloff added an insurance goal, which also counts as a power play goal, when he scored on a backhander into the empty net with 13.9 seconds to go in regulation.

The Saints will return to action against another Hockey East team, meeting Boston College in a 4:37 MST game at Denver in game one of the Wells Fargo Cup at the University of Denver on New Year's Day.
