Tigers Topped by Mass.-Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. - Mass.-Lowell used three unassisted third period goals to snap a 1-1 tie and skate to a 4-1 win over the Princeton men's hockey team on Friday night at Tsongas Arena.

Princeton's Dan Bartlett gave the Tigers a lead just 1:52 into the game when he scored on a quick shot high on the stick side of River Hawk goaltender Carter Hutton just after crossing into the UML zone. Defensemen Michael Sdao and Taylor Fedun assisted on Bartlett's sixth goal of the season.

Princeton held the lead through a stingy first period that saw the Tigers outshoot the River Hawks 6-4. UML drew even in the second period when Scott Campbell stuffed in a rebound at 12:41 following two great saves by Princeton goaltender Mike Condon, making his first collegiate start. Condon stoned Riley Wetmore just prior to Campbell finding the loose puck and scoring.

Princeton had a chance to regain the lead following the goal, but UML was able to kill three consecutive and nearly continuous penalties to close the period and keep the game even at 1-1.

The River Hawks then broke the 1-1 tie 4:18 into the third period when Wetmore's shot on a 2-on-1 snuck through Condon and rolled just over the line and into the Princeton goal. The goal also came on the power play. UML added goals by Michael Budd and Paul Worthington, into an empty net in the 4-1 win.

Princeton wound up outshooting UMass Lowell 30-27 after firing 17 shots on the River Hawk goal in the third period. Hutton made 29 saves in the win while Condon stopped 23.

Princeton falls to 3-8-1 with the loss while UML is now 10-5-1. The Tigers and River Hawks conclude their two-game set tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
