Dutchmen Topple Maine
SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union College men's
hockey fought off a late Maine rally to complete its weekend sweep
of the Black Bears with a 6-3 victory Saturday night at Messa Rink.
Senior forward Mario Valery-Trabucco led the Dutchmen with three
points, including a goal and two assists. Junior goaltender Corey
Milan moved into a third-place tie with Kris Mayotte '07 on Union's
career wins list with 27.
The Dutchmen start 2-0 for the sixth time in program history. Maine
goes to 0-2.
Union, which was looking to repeat its success from Friday, started
in a similar way with Simpson and Welsh scoring the first two goal
as they did the night before. Simpson burned Maine goaltender Dave
Wilson glove side at 9:10 of the first. Welsh and senior defenseman
Mike Wakita had helpers on the play.
Welsh got his name on the scoresheet again with this second goal of
the season when sophomore forward Kelly Zajac found his lineman in
the slot. Without hesitation, Welsh fired one past the block at
11:05.
The Dutchmen's momentum carried over into the second despite Maine
applying heavy pressure early. The defense and Milan eliminated the
threat, allowing sophomore forward Brian Yanovitch to pott his
first career goal. Simpson fed Yanovitch just inside the left
face-off dot and the Mansfield, MA native sneaked one past the
right ear of Wilson.
Like Welsh and Simpson, junior forward Adam Presizniuk had points
in both of the weekend's contest. Presizniuk deflected in a shot
from the left point by sophomore defenseman Nolan Julseth-White --
his first career point -- at 9:42 of the second.
A deflection on the Black Bears behave got them on the board when
Adam Shemansky tipped home a waist-high shot from Josh Van Dyk at
12:27.
After Valery-Trabucco cashed in on his first of the season, Maine's
Gustav Nyquist scored back-to-back goals at 7:36 and 9:58.
With the momentum starting to shift to the visitors side, junior
defenseman Brock Matheson light the lamp for the final time this
weekend with a goal set up by freshman forward Wayne Simpson with
19:24 gone in the period.
Milan continued his stellar play, making 26 saves with 11 in the
second and third periods.
The Dutchmen hit the road for the first time this season when it
goes to St. Cloud State on Friday, Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. and on
Saturday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. -- both times eastern.
