Saints Come from Behind to Down Tigers
PRINCETON, NJ -- Junior center Aaron Bogosian had a goal and an assist to key a four-goal explosion by St. Lawrence University's men's hockey team and the Saints skated to a 5-2 victory over Princeton in the ECAC Hockey opener for both teams at Hobey Baker Rink Friday night.
The Saints, 5-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in league play, stormed back from a 1-0 first period deficit to score four straight goals and take a 4-1 lead early in the third period. While Princeton, 1-2, 0-1, cut it to 4-2 on a five-on-three power play with 3:57 to play, Alex Curran scored into an empty net 1:28 later to seal the Saints' third straight win at Hobey Baker Rink.
It was the first game between the two teams in the last four meetings to be decided by more than one goal. Princeton beat the Saints 2-1 in Canton last season, the Saints won 3-1 in Princeton with an empty net goal adding to the one-goal margin and the two played to a 2-2 tie in the ECAC third place game last March.
Princeton came out on fire, outshooting the Saints 18-8 in the first period, but Saint goalie Alex Petizian was solid and the Tigers could get only one past him as freshman defenseman Michael Sdao scored his first career goal at 2:45 of the first period through a screen.
While the Saints didn't muster a lot of first period offense in an initial 20 minutes which included three power plays for each side, they did get Princeton's attack under control in the second period and took the play to the Tigers.
"Alex held us in there in the first period," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "Princeton really came out hard, and I thought our guys did a good job weathering the storm. We settled down in the second period and did a better job of breaking out and of controlling the puck in the offensive end."
Jeremiah Cunningham set up the tying goal as he took the puck from Kyle Flanagan at the Princeton blue line and raced toward the net. Cunningham pulled Princeton goalie Zane Kalemba toward him and then slid a perfect cross-crease pass to Mike McKenzie, who buried his third of the year into the open half of the net to tie the game at 1-1 8:23 into the second.
The Saint penalty kill got into the act and put the Saints in front just over five minutes later. Jacob Drewiske took the puck deep into the Princeton end with the Saints a man down and after a flurry of shots which went just wide or were stopped by a scrambling Kalemba, Max Mobley picked up a rebound and put it under the crossbar for his first collegiate goal at 13:48. Bogosian then put the Saints up two as he took the puck from Jared Keller deep in his own defensive end and went coast-to-coast, snapping a shot behind Kalemba at 17:03 for his first of the year.
"We made some big plays in the second period to take control of the game," said Marsh. "The first goal was obviously a big one as it turned momentum in our favor, but Drewiske and Mobley were tremendous on the penalty kill and that really helped us get going in the right direction."
Bogosian then set up a key goal for the Saints, putting them up 4-1 just 2:17 into the third. The Saint junior center won the draw in the Princeton end and got the puck back from Jake Klancher, sending a pass across the goal mouth to Jared Keller, who was all alone and buried his second of the year to make it 4-1.
"Bogo's goal was a great play and really was the play that set us up for the win," Marsh said. "And he made a big pass in the third period for the fourth goal. He played an outstanding game from start to finish."
The Saints killed all but six seconds of a Princeton five-on-three late in the period, but Tyler Beachell snuck one between Petizian and the post from the center slot at 16:03 to make it a 4-2 game. The Tigers then gambled and pulled Kalemba for an extra attacker with 2:46 to go, but Curran foiled that plan, taking the puck from a Princeton forward and flipping it into the empty net from the center line at 17:31 to wrap it up.
Petizian finished with 32 saves to earn his first win of the year after two losses and a tie in three previous starts while Kalemba had 25 stops for Princeton.
